This is volume 1 containing issues 1-5 of the Young Avengers comic book series, but there is a older version of the Young Avengers from 2005/6 that might be helpful to read first. The whole of the first 5 issues read like one chapter of a novel.

A dun start to the series, but panders a bit much. Can't be mad because I am the audience they're pandering to. My fav avengers team, the others don't exist to me.

Summary:

Sometimes, there are heroes who have the power to change the world. Sometimes, that power shouldn't be used. Take this recent adventure, which was all caused by Wiccan trying to undo a loss from a few years ago.

Only for this sweet thought to be turned on its head. Now the Young Avengers are scrambling, and they're fighting the most unlikely of foes – their parents? Sort of?

Review:

Okay, okay, I've been meaning to read Young Avengers for WAY too long. I'm finally fixing that mistake by diving into Young Avengers Vol. 1. Thus far; I can already tell that the series is worth the hype (and the accidentally long wait).

The characters alone make this a fun adventure. We have Wiccan and Hulkling (love them), Kate Bishop and Marvel Boy, Ms. America, and finally, Kid Loki. It may not be a combination readers expected, but man, does it lead to some fun-fueled chaos! Granted, with Kieron Gillen at the helm, I expected nothing less. I love his writing. Combine that with Jamie McKelvie's illustrations, and you've got the perfect storm, comically speaking.

It felt like two plots were running through this volume. The first is the parent-focused chaos resulting from Wiccan's spell. The second is whatever Kid-Loki is actually up to. I'm looking forward to seeing how the latter plays out.

Long story short – I'm happy to finally be reading Young Avengers, and I can't wait to dive into the second volume.

This book is super fun but also super serious in a very particular way. It actually feels like being inside a teenager's head, without quite so much melodrama--that is, it's a little more Freaks and Geeks than it is Degrassi. Also, Kate Bishop's "metaphor!" refrain is absolutely appropriate, but it's metaphor well-down.

marvel you can count on me for everything

Honestly I only started reading this because it came free with my Kindle Unlimited trial and I'd recently read a Kate Bishop book. I hardly knew these characters and/or how they got where they were and the Marvel NOW! Point One material just confused me, but once the actual story got started... It was really fun, and possibly my first ever comics with this much diversity, I loved every character (I think) and I need to get to the next volume now. Oh, and also great art and layouts!

Was I supposed to read something else before this? I loved the characters and each of their personalities but I felt like I was missing key plot information?

I genuinely cannot tell if this was actually really good or if I just love this creative team so much I see it all through fangirl-colored glasses.

This first volume of the Young Avengers story acts to introduce the characters. Loki has decided to reunite the Young Avengers so he approaches Ms. America to try and get her onboard. Unfortunately she doesn't trust him, so even when he tries to stop Wiccan from making a huge mistake that will cost them all, she stops him. Unfortunately, Wiccan is able to cast the spell that brings Mother into their world and changes things for all of them. Together, Loki, Ms. America, Wiccan, Hulkling, Marvel Boy, and Kate "Hawkeye" Bishop must try and stop the spell before it's too late.

I loved this! It was so much fun to read. The cast of characters is incredibly charming and funny, keeping the action moving well. The story itself was easy to understand even with limited background knowledge. I liked the way that the group was presented: young, fun, hardworking. I also thought they had fantastic chemistry that really made the book fun to read and see the interactions. I also loved the art, of course.

I think this is one of the few comic book stories you can approach with essentially no knowledge of what is going on in the comic book-verse. The book doesn't require you to have a lot of knowledge about the characters to really understand them. For the knowledge you do need, there are asides that really set up the background, as was the case with Loki. The characters motivations are really clear, and the plot itself doesn't really require a ton of knowledge about the rest of the Marvel universe.

Wiccan's story is really at the foreground as he is dealing with his own strengths, weaknesses, and the limitations of his physical form. There's also so great romantic moments between Wiccan and Hulkling - which is what leads to this spell gone awry. I like Marvel Boy and Kate Bishop, you don't see nearly as much of them, but they provide excellent humor throughout the story. I especially loved when Marvel Boy introduced her to his parents. I found the villain, Mother, interesting but didn't know much about her. I also liked how they played on the fact that parents don't often take teenagers seriously by making the adults actually blind to what was going on with Mother.

I really liked the overall design of the comic. The art was really great, it looked really clean and fit the characters well. I also loved the scenes where the characters are represented by colours, because it looked really cool. The variant art in this, by the way, is amazing. Bryan Lee O'Malley did a variant for the first issue, and it's freaking amazing.

Overall I just really loved this volume. I highly recommend this series!
