This is a fun jaunt into the Marvel Universe. I know I'm missing some bits from not reading the first Young Avengers series, but this is all I could get my hands on. I love America. I want more America.
Our heroes are forced to come together after disbanding when Wiccan tries to make his boyfriend, Hulkling, happy by resurrecting his dead mother. This ends up to not be Hulkling's mother but a parent controlling parasite. So our heroes must reunite to fight every teenager's arch nemesis: their parents.
This is a snappy and flashy looking comic. The title is style>substance and that is almost literally true. The reintroduction of everyone is great, with just enough mystery to hopefully be explored in later volumes.

Team books start out confusing but now they're all together, so......
The thing is, Marvel Canon is so extensive it's impossible to really keep up. The trick for the writers is to make the story enjoyable enough that the reader doesn't mind being a bit confused. What's going on here? Enh, I'm sure I'll figure it out. Superheroes should always be teenagers. Jamie McKelvie's art is lovely. Everyone's facial expressions are delightful. These characters are charming. It's good enough for me!
Re-read 2018: Still a little confused on the backstories of both the characters and the universe, but I enjoyed reading this again!
It must be difficult coming up with a concept for unifying a new super-powered group. This chooses to combine a few ideas. So there's Loki up to some plan of his own, playing the heroes for his own purpose. More obviously Wiccan tries a spell that is subverted to threaten everyone in the group. It'll be interesting to see how these play out.

Well I was not expecting that. I think this is the first Marvel Now read. This is really modern so took some adjusting. I've heard of these characters but never experienced them. Twas a good start though.
Young Avengers Vol 1: Style > Substance written by Kieron Gillen and illustrated by Jamie McKelvie and Mike Norton collects issues #1-5 of the Young Avengers ongoing series. It is not, in case you were wondering, about the Avengers in their youth but about a group of teens(ish) who have superpowers and form their own world-saving gang. Even if the big bad in this volume is accidentally of their own making.
This comic had a very YA feel to it, much like Ms Marvel, but unlike any other comic series I've read so far. And really, the fact that the blurb mentions Tumblr should probably be a hint of the demographic they're aiming at. So if YA and teen stories are your thing, this is probably the comic for you. Although I'm not sure how old some of the characters are... I'd guess early 20s for some of them?
So basically this is the story of a group of super-powered teens getting back together as an evil-fighting team. The arc starts with Kid Loki trying to convince them all to come back to avenging, and ends with a crisis pulling them all together. And there's some "whoops I screwed up and now the world is in danger" in the middle there.
The presentation style of the comic is very up-beat and modern as well. The vocabulary is very now (well, Marvel-Earth-now, anyway, with StarkPads instead of iPads for example) and the creators have done some interesting things with layout. Some of the pages were quite experimental/unconventional in how they told the story and I think this fitted in well with the overall modern tone of the whole comic.
Young Avengers was a fun and entertaining read about a character set I mostly didn't know anything about before picking it up. (Obviously I know who Loki is and I'd also heard of Kate Bishop/Hawkeye, but that's it.) Recommended for anyone wanting to bring some YA and youthful fun to their comics reading experience.
