4.13 AVERAGE

I loved this book! Finally I have found I Marvel book I can get into. The Marvel books I have picked up so far have always fallen a bit short, however this one really delivered. I loved all of the characters. They felt like real teenagers, but at the same time were really developed characters, despite this being the first time I have come across them and this book only being 5 issues long.

Started reading this book on the bus #damnitlokiyoumadememissmystop

I don't want to give too much away but I really loved the plot. There are so many instanced in these stories of young characters who have lost their parent it was great to see that idea played with. And Loki's meddling in the whole thing was great. It will be interesting to see where that goes.

The art work is superb. McKelvie's ability to draw even very subtle expressions so clearly communicates emotion and a character's thoughts where there isn't time for large amounts of text. The breakdown of the panels throughout the book made the pages visually interesting and lent themselves to the narrative.

Now I just have to cross my fingers and hope that my local library can locate the second volume.

Corny as hell and I loved every minute. Ridiculous.
adventurous emotional fast-paced
Strong character development: Yes
Loveable characters: Yes
Diverse cast of characters: Yes
Flaws of characters a main focus: Yes

So I read all three of these the last couple of days. Its the complete run of the Young Avengers by Gillen and McKelvie. I like comic books but I LOVE them when they have a nice complete story. Say its the novelist in me. These are wonderful. I can't wait to give them a reread to see what I missed in my first quick read through.

All the characters are young, obviously, but not necessarily teenagers. Kate Bishop, Hawkeye, is 20. Noh-varr is older (and a pretty hot alien). The story is quick and action packed even though its not all battle after battle. There's a really adorable couple (And the name Hulking in possibly one of the cutest things I've ever heard), some kick ass girls, and maybe most interesting is kid Loki. I like Loki. He's a complex character who doesn't even know where he stands most of the time.

Now the story itself seems simple, Billy uses his powers to help his boyfriend and things go wrong, all the parents on earth turn against them and they can't get them back until Billy figures out his powers to undo his spell. Its a simplistic summary, but it'll do. Mostly just pick it up because it's cute and funny, the writers are very aware of their fans and things like tumblr. It comes across as current and not TOO over done with trendy references. And in the end you have a wonderful complete story with young superheroes coming into their own and a kid Loki who has become what he needs to be for the new comic Loki: Agents of Asgard (Which by the way, is wonerful. You should go read that, too.)

superhero comics confuse me a lot but this is one of the most enjoyable I've read!! looking forward to reading the next volume.

Ok first let me say that I love the idea of young avengers more now that I've read it. Before, I was so ehh about it but I have seen the light now. This was a good intro but I hope it's not the best volume.

When it comes to Marvel story-lines they tend to be a take it or leave it kind of quality, and after finding some that have left me feeling some way entertained I was so happy to when Young Avengers turned out to be worth reading right from issue one.

The Marvel Now! Young Avengers story line brings together Kid Loki, Marvel Boy, Ms. America, Wiccan, Hulking, and Kate Bishop in a very unlikely way. Wiccan makes a wish come true for Hulking and sort of messes up reality (just like his mother…*SIGH*) causing rather big mess that isn’t easily fixed. The story itself could probably be a bit stronger in some areas, but I really liked seeing some of the old crew back together. Plus I’m not even going to lie…Kid Loki was a huge draw for me. I know Old Loki pretty well, and other than the movies with Tom Hiddelston’s Loki I haven’t really had much of a chance to see modern Loki. So this was sort of an excuse to learn more about him. These first five issues really set up the quick back-stories for each character just in case you haven’t had experience with them and waste little to no time getting you into the thick of the problem. The humor is great, the characters are really cool, and it’s actually pretty relevant to real teens. It’s rare to see teen superheroes who are actually worth reading about or who don’t wallow in ALL THE angst.

I’ll be the first one to say I really hate Scarlet Witch and her reality bending powers, I feel like they cause a good 30% of the problems that go into major story arcs. (They probably don’t but UGH) So I was hesitant to like Wiccan, because he has the same powers to some extent….and of course the first thing he does in the series messes up everything. However I really liked him and it really sucks to see how much he struggles with balances that and his normal life. His relationship with Hulking is really sweet but of course Loki has sown seeds of discord so I’m curious to see if what he’s said will have any effect on them. Kid Loki has a lot going on as well and I’m definitely going to grab some Thor issues and see some of the detail the quick recap left out. He’s funny and loves pointing out ridiculous things they we’ve come to accept.

So overall I think the Young Avengers is a hit! I’m definitely going to read the rest of the series.

(3.5 stars) A bit confusing, but then again, it's sort of meant to be.

It was pretty funny and had plenty of action. I would have liked Kate to be more relevant, because I love her, and for everyone to have more clear motivations, but like... it's fine. It's a fun read. If it's a little too confusing, I think it's because there's backstory I don't have, and that's nearly always a problem (unless it's a top-tier, friendly to beginners comic) so it's not unique to this volume.

Still, though. Marvel, get your shit together. I shouldn't go into every new comic wondering what twenty-three other volumes I should have read first.

ahhh

Low on time so forgive the brevity - one of the coolest and most zeitgeisty of superhero comics by the team that went on to double down on that with the Wicker And The Divine. It's got Li'l Loki and Chavez America and Kate Hawkeye and Hulkling and Wiccan an d Marvel Boy and that is why you should read it because it is awesome.
