This book is like a catchy tune you heard on the radio that one likes without knowing why and while being full aware that there are better pieces of art. At least I can tell what I disliked about the books. It's Arthur. I feel no connection to him whatsoever, although I used to have asthma when I was younger – how can that be?
Well, it's a fact that Arthur Penhaligon is not the most complex main character that a book can have. Not the worst one, but there is not much to look at, to be honest. He's grateful for being adopted by such a nice family (a family the reader doesn't get to know well, either, so it's no surprise that I'm not quite convinced by Arthur's motivation), he sucks at sport due to his constitution, he can be brave and smart when needed but he seems to be an incredibly boring guy to me, when one can ignore all the stuff that happens around him.
How can this be? How can the hero of such an original story be so dull and uninspired when the House with all its dangers and inhabitants is so full of lovely steampunk elements and surrealistic logic?
I don't know. All I know is I'm going to read the next book soon.

It was better than the first, and I am anxious to read the next book. However, I really hope that all the remaining books won't be like the first two, with Arthur constantly whining that he wants to go home. It would be nice if he would assume his power for once!
Another amazing read from Garth Nix. Another key another adventure for Arthur to save another part of the house which did prove to be a bit difficult for him to begin with as he did have to hi nt for a way to get back into the house.
Arthur did have to get past alot of hurdles in this adventure in order to achieve his goals, however I felt like he didn't expect his surprise attack from one of the days henchmen so early on.
All I can say is I really did like this book so much, I cannot wait to read book 3 to continue the adventure.
You meet Arthur one of the main cast of the book, I believe, the hero of this book series.

Enjoying this reread, if I was younger I think it would definitely rate it higher.
The characterisation of the days as days of the week, I’m loving the subtle nods to the seven deadly sins

It's kind of ridiculous how much of the plot I could recite going into this book. It's just so good, Arthur is an awesome protagonist and the supporting cast of characters are hilarious and just plain great. The world is really fleshed out and having read the rest of the books the seeds planted in this one especially have such far reaching consequences (slight pun intended (only people who've read the books will get it))...
