I really want to like this series more than I do. I find Arthur incredibly tedious. The quirky characters and items in the House are fine, and the background concept of the story and it’s world building are interesting. Arthur is just boring and generally unlikable. At the end of the book, it seems like he was finally excepting his situation, but not before I listen to seven hours of whining.

Then again, this is a middle grade novel and written for a middle grade audience. It does not have to (nor should it) meet adult expectations.

I like this series more than Harry Potter. But it's got nowhere near the popularity that Harry Potter got.

Maybe it's just too weird?

Some more interesting parts in the second book, but also the same issue of it being just a laundry list of tasks. Audio.

I like how you start learning a bit more about the House and everything in it in this book; including meeting both the Old One and the Mariner for the first time. It is also interesting to see how things are made in the House. I had forgotten that the Morrow Days start taking an interest in Arthur so early on in the book.
