I got this during one of Audible's "Buy Two Books, Get One Free" promotions, and for a freebie, it was pretty good.
Woods has a strong handle on storytelling and the plot was smart enough to be interesting, but not overly academic or complex, which is why, I suspect, he's so well read. And I know that makes me sound snobby, but remember that I just read him, too.
If you're reading this as a woman living in the 21st century, you might not dig all of the roles Woods puts his female characters into, but it's a male author writing a male protagonist in a popular thriller that takes place in the 1970s. So, it's not exactly a surprise.
Tom Stechschulte narrates this, and he also read McCarthy's The Road, which I was not a fan of (yes, I'm in the minority here). But Stechschulte does a nice job here and I enjoyed the performance.

"Under the Lake", by Stuart Woods. Very good story! I could not put the book down it was so interesting! I never guessed the book would end the way it did! A must read!

Please do yourself a favor and don’t read this. It’s not worth your time. I, too, was lured in and betrayed by the Stephen King review on the cover.
1. Gratuitous s*x scenes
2. P*dophila
3. Massive inc*st
4. The ghost story is so back seat that I genuinely forgot about it for awhile
5. MASSIVE INC*ST
6. Waste. Of. Time.

I only got to page 44 (Chapter 4). The main character held no appeal for me, the writing was mediocre, and it's nearly 400 pages long. I decided to cut my losses.
Not bad at all. This was a nice part mystery investigation, part supernatural...well...thriller I guess.
I never really connected with the protagonist. Really he was a sodden jerk for all but about 15% at the end.

This was a page turner for me. I about went crazy yesterday when I had only 30 pages left but didn't have time to read them until bedtime. The end was fairly predictable but yet had a couple of twists.
A while ago, I was looking for another mystery author to get into. I tried Woods' Holly Barker series. They were fine, but I was disappointed that Woods just didn't write females all that well. I tried a few of the Stone Barrington books and could never get into them all that much. My dad is reading Woods and at Christmas we were talking about authors with the family and my aunt recommended this one. I thought she said it was about Lake Lanier, but I must have mis-remembered that.
This was okay. It was a super quick read. I liked the main characters well enough. I was seriously squicked out about the revelation in the end, considering what happened about half way through. /shudder I was trying to be vague enough there so I don't have to hide the whole review for spoilers. In the end, this was okay, but doesn't make me want to read any more of Woods' books.

Wow! This was my first time reading this author and I’m surprised I haven’t picked up his stuff sooner! The book was a little slow at first, and I didn’t like the main character. But, that ending shook me. It was going to be a solid 3 stars but the ending solidified another star! Thankful to my bestie for recommending this book to me!
