I....ehhhh? There's a quote from Stephen King on the cover, "part detective story, part ghost story, part Southern Gothic...it scared the living hell out of me." Something key must've been edited out there, because I kept waiting to be scared, and the end is....I guess the best way to describe it without giving anything away is GROSS, but not scary. Also, Howell starts out as such a sad sack at the beginning, his transformation by the end is just bizarre. I get it's a small backwater and single men are scarce, but he did too well with the ladies, not to mention he suddenly remembered his Army training in time to do macho stuff? This book left me perplexed. I was trying something new, I made myself finish it, I didn't outright loathe it, so 3 stars. Will never recommend.

3 ½ stars

CW: suicidal ideation, suicide jokes, suicide, people in the 1980s being gross about LGBT and learning disabilities, cheating, incest, statutory rape, child death
Read for the "Read the States" challenge for: Georgia (This is a formal apology to Georgia, I am SO sorry this is the book I read for your state.)

John Howell, the main character of this novel, reminded me an awful lot of Paul Sheldon from Misery. Unfortunately, Paul was my second least favorite aspect of that book! So! Here we are.

everyone needs to read a little trash eevry once in awhile!
after finishing it: ah jeez it was horrible. why do i do this to myself?

Book #54 read in 2010

This was a ghost story instead of the usual police/legal/political suspense. It took a little while to get into the story, but once it took off I couldn't put it down.

I haven't read a mystery in a long time and this was an amazing one to come back to. I have never read any of Stuart Woods books before but not I can't wait to read more! It gives you enough to feel like you know how it will end, but there is another could be ending that gets you thinking again. This and the good pace and story telling though the two reporter characters pushing for information either by digging though things or asking the right question. I feel like most of mystery story with reporters are a over done trope but he does this well with two reporters. The ending was also a amazing ending.
The reason I gave this four stars and not five because there are a few little things that I am not crazy about. The main thing is that there is sex in the book. At the start it feel like it was becoming a repetitive love story that takes away from what could be a good story. There is a lot in the first half of the story then slowly comes to an end. There is also more detail then I feel like was needed. There is a purpose to talking about it but I wanted to see what was going on with the lake more. Then this is a small town with talk of incest. Just like the sex it does have a point even if it feels really pained out at the start.
This is a must read for a mystery, murder, ghost theme story lover. I can't wait to reread this and get my friends and family to read it to talk more about it.

A little creepy but good!

A ghost story hiding as a mystery, but it was still a good book. I'll try some more of him...
