Loved this sequel! The ending of ODW had me panicking for what book 2 would be.

When I tell you I’ll never overlook a sneaky, kinda mean, ginger prince again. I didn’t think much of Elm until this book & then I fell in love. Move over Ravyn, Prince Elm is the guy.

Anyway, like the first book, the magic system is very unique & well-established. I thought the Spirit of the Woods was intriguing & was glad to see an appearance in this book.

The best part of this duology, in my opinion, is the King, Maiden, Monster storyline with the Nightmare & Elspeth. The Shepherd King is made out to be the monster in Elspeth’s mind, a parasite & unwelcome voice. But as the books go on, you grow to love him & understand his adoration & love for Elspeth. He becomes a misunderstood, but beloved character for me.

I really enjoyed this duology. This book offered multiple perspectives and I love how the supporting characters in book one really became part of the main cast of characters by the end. Previous duologies that I've read felt like one book split into two, but these each had their own unique storyline and focus in the context of the bigger story. I enjoyed the second book even better than the first, and I love how the story turned out. I am looking forward to reading more of Rachel Gillig's works.
