3.5

Action packed exciting gangster adventure.

This was a beast of a book. Almost 600 pages. I saw a lot of mixed reviews and I understand why. I was engaged for the first 3/4 of the book and then wasn’t as interested in the last part. I feel like I missed something when the ending came. Overall a 3.5. A lot of unlikable characters, drama, sex, corruption and violence.

I loved this and am shocked to see the rating slowly climbing down! The only explanation I can think is that this book ends so abruptly.. but, this is just the beginning in a planned trilogy. I wish they added that to the description so you know what your getting into. More is coming!! Now, how long we have to wait that’s another story!

It’s not an ending that leaves me demanding more and furious to wait, just curious as to what the next chapter will be. We are plopped right in the middle of a mob family in India. We start out with Ajay who is a servant, working his way up, the trust and love he has for his boss and us not quite sure how he ended up in jail. Then Neda steps in. She is a journalist who doesn’t take crap and falls in love with this boss (son of one of the biggest mob family) but it’s a rocky road. Which brings us to Sunny’s narrative and follow his unhinged destruction.

I was hooked the whole way. It was the best kind of family drama. As I read I thought for sure this was going to be the “it” Book of 2023! Maybe it will… maybe it won’t. But if you like a rocky shit storm story more than you like your perfect happy endings tied up in a bow… read this!!

I honestly don’t know what to think of this book. It was compelling the way a train wreck or a plane crash is compelling—the writing itself is brilliant, but the characters are so miserable and hateful and mired in self-destructive tendencies that it was difficult to enjoy this book. Every character that you might root for obliterates themselves into ruin and tragedy, and while I appreciate a good tragedy, there is nothing learned from this. “Everything sucks and everything will always suck” is the vibe at the end of the book. Apparently this book is the first part of a trilogy, but I can’t find the heart to continue with this world.

3.25 stars - Ajay is by far the most compelling character in Age of Vice and his pov being the opening one grips readers and makes it impossible to put the book down! However, once the narrative shifts to Neda’s perspective things really start to drag. There is no reason for this book to be nearly 600 pages long; I think keeping the narrative snappier and around 400 pages would have done a world of work here. It would have kept readers interested the entire time without lagging at points. The format of this novel also didn’t help this issue. With all the time jumps and perspective shifts, it was easy to get confused at times. I also really really wish we had gotten more newspaper clippings sprinkled throughout. I personally find that format compelling and think it would have highlighted the corruption in the media that Kapoor eludes to.

Thank you to the publisher for the advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
