It was a good story utterly ruined by the author telling the reader how smart he is by constantly interrupting the story to insert “footnotes.” We won’t be listening to anymore if these.

A pleasant read, but hardly any Sherlock detecting. Instead it is Sherlock placed in history—in this case at the Zimmerman telegram.  More historical fiction than mystery. As historical fiction of this ilk, it can’t hold a candle to The Flashman books.

It was okay. Should I come across another of these books, I wouldn't hesitate to pick one up. I wonder how Meyer's plot would work without the conceit of Holmes and Watson. What if Meyer had created a spy novel without the constraints of the Holmesian framework? Although I don't dislike Holmes, I've never found him particularly that compelling of a character; I enjoy the mysteries, and Holmes and Watson were convenient conveyors of the plots.

It was a little slow--two too many twists

Having had the good fortune of being able to pick up (and get signed) the latest Sherlock Holmes entry from Nicholas Meyer last week at the “Inventing the Page” panel he moderated, I immediately set to the task of devouring this book, and devour it I did! Never one to disappoint with a new Holmes novel, Meyer’s latest adventure was a thoroughly enjoyable treat from start to finish.
