officially the first book DNF’d in 2024 at 180 pages. this book was so hyped up on booktok talking about enemies to lovers and morally grey men. there’s morally grey and then there’s men who torture toddlers. both love interests were totally insufferable, the writing is wattpad circa 2010, and that girl needed to be left alone healing far away from creepy men trying to feel her up when she’s actively being traumatized.

This is a book that leaves me wanting a lot more. The premise is about a girl, Juliette, who has a fatal touch and paralyses or kills whomever she touches. She now lives inside an asylum, in a dystopian world, a world ravaged by pollution. She is then taken out and is given the choice to either be a weapon or die. There's is also a romantic "sub-plot". I quote it because it should've been a sub-plot but instead takes a huge section of the plot. I came in expecting enemies to lovers, dystopia, action scenes and superheroes, but I was only disappointed.

The story has a lot of potential and I truly did enjoy the character development that Juliette goes through and you can clearly see the difference between her in the first page and the last page. And she does not develop just for the plot, she develops because OF the plot. It's a difficult distinction to make but your subconscious will always know it. She matures and understands the reality of her situation and the reality of the new world she's in. She gradually grows out of the petty, unreasonable and superfluous feelings and emotions that comes with such character development. The author truly did an excellent job in her character development.

The writing however fails almost everywhere else. There are too many metaphors and unnecessary comparisons and descriptions that stall the plot. Dystopian books are usually fast paced and filled with action and movements, unless the book is supposed to be slow and focuses on certain aspects only and is presented as a discussion. This book is clearly not meant to be either, so it is quite meaningless to make the book this slow-paced. I only excuse it since it is the first book of the series and one of the author's first books as well. Or maybe this just is her writing style and I'll just have to get used to it, who knows.

Now about the antagonist, I already know what is the direction of the development that Warner will be going through and I honestly cannot see how the author is going to take us from point A to point B in a satisfactory way. I am genuinely curious. And the other characters are all mediocre and different enough for me to be okay with it. However I absolutely adore Kenji, because he finally brings in the comedic RELIEF that the book so desperately needed. The writing made it feel like an obituary and the plot was going nowhere, but the minute Kenji came in, the entire book brightend up. He definitely felt like a breath of fresh air.

I'll be honest I really did not enjoy the book. But I did buy the next two books in the series so I have no choice but to read them as well, so I might as well try my best. I also have a feeling that once the author is able to fully and wholly understand their writing style and the directions the series could go in, the writing will accordingly mature. I can at least hope for it.
