A wonderful ending to one of my favorite series. I love Gen, I love Attolia, I love Eddis, I love everyone! MWT is so great at characters. Pheris is the narrator of this tale and I really enjoyed watching everything unfold. I'm being vague because I don't want to spoil anything but YAY!
What if... I ignore my TBR list and just reread this series again...

Apparently, I'm not alone in feeling underwhelmed by this concluding book to the Thief novels.
Apparently, I'm also writing unstarred reviews today. I like doing that. It gives me a sense of power.
I rooted for Pheris, I couldn't not. But there were times I felt frustrated with the single perspective we were getting and actually got more excited entering into the brief "third person" perspectives imagined by Pheris himself. (Also, I was still confused at the end. A possible answer to my confusion just occurred, or I could have totally missed something while reading and probably did. But I was *rather* confused which didn't help a sense of satisfaction.)
Also I know I literally spent the review of the last book rambling ecstatically about how I'm here for the tropes Turner prefers, and I am. But I don't like it when character-based tropes fail to show off anything new about the character or promote an arc. Enough of that happened to rub me wrong.
And a lot of people died. (Okay, I'm one to talk. It's a war book, yes, I wrote one of those. Maybe I was just enjoying the political tension and backstabbing without having to deal with full-blown gut punch war.) I was over having beloved characters die, and die in a very blunted, fashion, by the second such death.
I didn't condone/enjoy the homosexual relationship which starred briefly and involved characters I previously assumed to be platonic. An author has a right, humanly speaking, to write what she wishes, regardless whether it aligns with my convictions or not. As this did not align with mine, it was unable to spark the intended reaction and joined my other dissatisfactions.
So much good was in this book. I laughed. I questioned. I had emotions. But at the end of the day, I don't know if I'll reread, and that's the first time I've said that about a Thief book.

This was good, but I fully admit that I don’t remember enough of the details of the earlier books, and that knowledge would certainly given these events more weight. So that’s on me. Maybe I need to go back to the beginning and re-read the whole thing?
I briefly thought I was going to rate this a 4, because while I was enjoying it, at first I felt like it was just fleshing out the lives of some of the secondary characters of the earlier books. Seeing Pheris come into himself was great, but it felt more like the beginning of a series than its conclusion.
Boy was I wrong, and why did I ever doubt? This book picks up the threads set out by the earlier books, and carries on beautifully before pulling them all together in a way that feels like a very satisfying end to the series and offers answers to what comes after for these characters without feeling like it closes out the world.
I'm impressed. And I still love the interweaving of the actions of humans and gods throughout the series, and find the scenes where humans and gods interact or people react to supernatural messages *so cool*.
