Goodness gracious.

The sixth and final book did NOT disappoint.

It was so, so, so very good.

SO. GOOD.

Megan Whalen Turner is brilliant. And, I very much look forward to whatever she writes next.

By the time you get to last book, it's hard to give an objective review since I've been so invested in this series. None the less, I will try.

I really did enjoy Return of the Thief. It has a good pace and told through the eyes of a new character named Pheris. There were some things Pheris gets to see that I don't think he would actually get to see, but I was OK with it for the mere sake of telling the story consistently and fluidly. I still loved all the characters. I would say there didn't feel like the notable Megan Whalen Turner "plot twist" that is in the other 5 books; yet, she leaves enough mystery and vague prophecies in there to keep you on your toes and guessing as you go. Overall, I really enjoyed the book and was happy with the ending.

The Queen's Thief series is like part greek mythology and part King Arthur (because of all the kings and queens involved) with always a huge twist at the end. I would recommend the whole series to anyone.

How do I review the last book in one of my favourite series without blubbering on.

A fantastic conclusion to a magnificent series of theft, betrayal, love and power, impetuous incredulity and a cast of finely crafted characters, each with their vices and virtues.

This book was definitely the domino effect manifest. In an interview Megan Whalen Turner said: “I’m not aiming to create a puzzle to test readers. The effect I am going for is more like a chain of dominoes going down. I want to give the reader a piece of information at the end that changes their interpretation of everything that’s happened before.” And she does it beautifully, expertly.

This book was a revelation upon revelation. From Teleus and Relius, to the sponsoring of Therespides stirring dissent to strengthen Eddis as monarch, to the reason why Thief’s cannot rule and why their position is both hated and contested. The revelation that the Greater Powers weren’t coming because of Eugenides’ transformation from Thief to king of a foreign country to Annux...the most profound was the nature of being Thief and the toll it takes, the pressure of your God.

One of the many things I love about this series is the importance of names. We didn’t know the minister of wars’ one until almost the last page, Gen’s name is also his title. The little peninsula rulers hold their relative country’s names as their title. The power of names, of titles, and what they are inscribed with and by whom.

The relationships morph and evolve, though they remain known to us, in that we can’t quite predict what will provoke, surrender, enrage, and soften Irene and Gen. They are one of the focal points that enrich this series with unpredictability as much as they are predictable.

”Attolia says she leaves with you.”A shock. Unpredictable.

Also, Eugenides’ power...

Pheris was a steadfast protagonist; his decisions and ties he forges from Relius to Ion and the King, as well as the ones he hasn’t let go of (Jurdisius and Sejanus) shape him, and become him. His perspective was fresh and new while being entirely comforting. What I’ve learned is that this is a series full of wonderful contradictions.

I’ll probably come up to refine and add and cut this review. But right now, I want to say thank you for this finale, this treasure of a series that feels like home.
