This one was hard to rate, but I decided to go ahead and give it a 4⭐ because overall, I enjoyed it and it will stay with me longer than other books I've read this year. And does involve some spoilers

What it did well:
- It's very well written, and done in a way that stands out and is memorable (which is really hard to do with WW2 novels, since so much has been written about it). It dives into the atrocities and emotions, which is what makes it memorable and haunting.
- There is discussion on a lot of WW2 that most authors are not brave enough to touch, like the Nazi medical experiments and trials.
- A good portion of the book takes place after the war has ended, and the recovery/life goes on/PTSD. That's not something I see often but needs to be talked about more.

But:
- I really only liked the characters on ONE of the three stories being told simultaneously.
- Herta's rape, and the rape she witnessed, were graphic. But they seemed more written to try to get the reader to have pitty for her than actually contributing to the story.....or as fan service as a pre-karma for her actions as a Nazi doctor, and it just felt really gross and unnecessary.
- Caroline seems like she was written just to break up the atrocities of war, and wasn't really motivating or interesting.
- The multiple story lines that rush to converge at the end and tie everything together felt really messy.

There were points where I questioned, “why would I read something that is so upsetting and difficult?”, before reminding myself my discomfort was nominal compared to the pain these characters (based off of real people) were experiencing. It’s also a hallmark of powerful writing, scenes invoked vivid imagery, internal conflict, and raw emotions. Reading the author’s note made these stories all the more compelling.

This is a perfectly written book. Based in reality and written in a way to get people to care. This is a book everyone needs to read.

This is an illuminating historical fiction that touches on a lesser known side of women’s history during WWII and beyond. While the first part seemed a bit slow, the characters are well worth the read. The authors decisions about the narrative and direction of the story allows for moments of great pain and great empathy.

This is not an easy read but that is the point. Well done, and also while this is historical fiction, two of the main characters are based on real women, making this all the more powerful.

I will say that I did enjoy reading this book, even on audiobook which is hard for me with fiction, especially multiple POVs. It did take me a bit to sort out which MC is which.

I appreciate that the book is based on real women and history, but there were some liberties that were taken that, upon reflection run me the wrong way. The biggest and most conflicting one is the invented relationship with the fake, famous French actor. Like she couldn't care about the war and helping people in the concentration camps unless she had a guy to be in love with? I know the author says she thinks the real historical figure whom this women is based surely wouldn't mind, but I do.

I also in general think a lot of the resolution after the war happened way too quickly and cleanly. I don't buy that one conversation with the doctor
healed Katya and made her be a better mother
🤷‍♀️.

But again I did enjoy it in the moment, and that counts for a lot with me!

Interesting but incredibly heartbreaking read. I absolutely hate it that people from Eastern European countries who were in concentration camps went home to countries that were taken over by the soviets who weren’t much better than the nazis; I haven’t thought much about what post-war Europe or rebuilding was like and it makes me want to learn more about that time period. I didn’t particularly love the writing style (abrupt and at times emotionless, especially in dialogue), and the book seemed slower in the last quarter. Overall, I’m glad I read it, but I’m not sure I’ll read this particular author again.
