One of my favorite genres is historical fiction about WWII. However, what is required of a good historical fiction story is just that: a story. Otherwise, it's just a retelling of history. While I empathized with the plot of the Polish prisoners of concentration camps, Kasia's back story was less than compelling. Also, Herta's character was two-dimensional leaving me feeling neutral about her. I was hoping for more of a connection between the women. At the very least, I was hoping for more redemption after reading about the horrors that went on during this horrible event.

I know I’m in the minority but I did not like this book. The character development felt weak and the writing felt emotionally detached for some reason? Wish I knew why. Also wish I knew why we even got a perspective from the evil Nazi doctor. Reading the authors note made me wish I liked this book more because she is telling the story of truly strong and remarkable real life women. But this one missed the mark for me

Wow! This is a new all time favorite of mine! This book follows the heartbreaking story of three women in WWII & beyond. Caroline, who is a liaison to the French Consulate in New York, Kasia, a Polish teenager who is taken to an all women's concentration camp in Germany, and last and definitely (yes definitely) least - Herta, a German doctor. This book spans two decades and these women's lives intersect in life changing ways. The main story to me is Kasia and the gut wrenching torment she endured and had to eventually overcome. Everyone should read this, I highly recommend it.
