I couldn't get past the first gruesome story involving the pool. He's really one-upped himself this time on the over the top stories.
Is the author serious about people fainting when he read "Guts"?!! Was he reading to children? Or old people? Come on! It was bad, but not THAT bad. What kind of loser faints at that? I really have a hard time believing that crap. I find it much easier to believe that the author was just trying to shock people with the fainting stories... so more people would read the book. I wish I hadn't even read the afterword. "The 'Guts' Effect"... what a joke! This was my first Chuck Palahniuk book, and I am glad it is finished. Too bad I bought another of his books already!
As disgusting, stomach churning, unsettling, and pissed off as this book made me feel; I LOVED it! My first Chuck Palahniuk book and I'm happy with my desicion. This story was well formed and served it's propose to crawl under your skin and make you think about the depths someone can go to.

The author satirizes the human race through a series of short stories embedded ina framing device. The ending implies that if you made it that far, well, you're One of Us...One of Us...One of Us...
This isn't really a horror story cycle but a sublimely disgusting one. Seriously. EVERYTHING it is possible to trigger disgust on, Palahniuk hits. I didn't care for the book so much as find it extremely thorough without losing my attention.
Now, pair this with AND THEM THERE WERE NONE for a fun contrast...
