A tragedy tore apart the marriage of Edie and Joe. Ten years later, Edie is still bitter and angry, having never fully dealt with the emotions wrapped around what happened. When her mother-in-law dies, leaving an old villa in Sicily to Edie and Joe, their trip to find a missing heirloom and prepare the estate to sell begins unwinding old family and local secrets - ones that someone is trying to keep hidden.

Glimpses of the past tragedy are slowly revealed as the book progresses, along with family history, and the past becomes a tool for healing and reconciliation for hurts that seem unforgettable.

The mix of past mystery with current day drama was well done (although I will admit I figured some of it out - it was still good!).

Rating: 4.5/5 stars

This book was provided by the publisher via NetGalley, although I was not required to write a positive review.

What an excellent read! I would definitely put this novel in the categories of a summer beach read. The setting in Sicily instantly drew me in, and I love a little murder mystery/love triangle thrown in. I have to say that the “plot twist” was actually quite predictable, but enjoyable none the less!

I was very underwhelmed, didn’t like the characters and they felt flat, and the mystery also was predictable and didn’t really help the story line. I skimmed a lot of the book and almost DNF.

So far this book is dreadfully boring. The main character could have declined the inheritance. Or she could have discussed what the plan was with her ex, but instead she just bumbles along without a plan. And on and on about how it is all Amma's fault that her son died but no explanation, at least not yet as far as I am in the book and it seems like I have been reading forever...well I finished the book and now wish I hadn't bothered. What an utter waste of my time. Nothing, absolutely nothing happens in the 1st part of the book, then it all happens at once and "it" isn't all that shocking or surprising. Notva goodcrea at all. Do not waste your time.

Nothing special, just a decently written collection of thriller tropes woven together in a big, crumbling Sicilian villa. Good twists even if I predicted them.

Crumbling town and villa ✅
Divorced couple rediscovering themselves ✅

I enjoyed this book. It had a lot of moving parts all involving different people, but it still worked, and all came together very nicely in the end.

I wasn’t sure about this book at first. I couldn’t understand Edie. Her bitterness tired me, even if it was a justifiable bitterness. However, the mysterious atmosphere of the book gripped me and I carried on. I’m so happy I did. This is a beautiful tale of forgiveness and healing in the long wake of a child’s death.

Reasonable holiday read, it kept me turning pages early on-although I had predicted most of the twists before they happened.

The overall themes were a little clichéd and characters fairly by the numbers. Some of the mystery and drama felt a bit artificial. That sounds a bit harsher than it probably justifies. I was perfectly happy reading it but I suspect I'll have forgotten it in a week or two
