Lewis schrijft beeldend en snel, met korte hoofdstukken en weinig ballast. Dat zorgt ervoor dat dit boek leest als een trein, mede doordat de actie direct begint. Het vrouwelijke hoofdpersonage Rosalyn Quest is sterk neergezet en dwingt tot meeleven. De overige personages hadden wat meer uitwerking mogen krijgen; dat had het verhaal nog sterker gemaakt.
De setting is kleurrijk en divers, met internationale locaties, unieke plekken en luxe resorts die een bijna filmisch gevoel oproepen. Qua thema’s draait dit verhaal om familie versus vrijheid en de innerlijke strijd die daarmee gepaard gaat. Ook vertrouwen en verraad spelen een grote rol: wie is bondgenoot in een spel waarin alles draait om bedrog?
De vergelijking met ‘The Hunger Games’ wordt vaak gemaakt en is terecht, maar deze duologie doet er zeker niet voor onder. Fans van ‘Ocean’s Eleven’ zullen genieten van de slimme puzzels en spectaculaire overvallen. Daarnaast is ‘Thieves’ Gambit’ een uitstekende instapper voor tieners die nog niet vaak thrillers hebben gelezen. Een energieke en meeslepende young adult thriller die niet alleen spannend is, maar ook smaakt naar meer.

This is an incredible debut novel packed full of action, adventure and so many twists. It has a bit of romance, some found family and a lot of tension! As a fan of the inheritance games and six of crows I knew going into this it was going to be my kind of read but honestly I would recommend this to anyone who loves an action packed story with great writing and some amazing locations. I loved being in the action and experienced the craziness with our characters. This is going to make an incredible series and movie for sure. I cannot wait to read more from this series and this author and have already recommended this to so many people!

I wish I had liked this more. I wanted to end my reading of the SCASL list books on a high note but instead went out with a whimper. This book features a competition style Ocean's 11 caper game with the winner receiving anything they wish for. The main character, part of a family renown in the criminal world got an invitation but had no intention of competing, wanting to go to an elite gymnastic camp instead. That all changes when in a last minute job with her mom goes wrong resulting in her mom being kidnapped and held for ransom. The main character has no choice now but to compete and to win. Enter the classic series of escalating challenges, gut-wrenching eliminations, surprising love interests, and a last minute betrayal set in motion from the start of the book and you have this book. I have seen all this done before. This author used a basic boiling plate and left it void of personal touch. I will not continue in the series.
