Cammy and JP both had hurt and traumas from the past that they both needed to work through before they could be together. The chemistry between Cammy and JP was amazing. Slade was the only one who took the time to see JP for who he is and be there for him when he needed help and support, even if he didn’t agree.
The shootout for the charity scene made me tear up. He was doing his best to keep it together. Trying not to let anyone see how brokenhearted he was, giving up everything he loved because he didn’t feel worthy, and everything would be better without him around.
Cammy is very stubborn about listening to what JP has to say about what happened in the past and trying to fix it. She also lets her dad get away with too much throughout the book. She is trying to make up for all the lost time with him. Which is understandable, but it just makes it harder for her to let anyone in, forgive and heal.
JP is trying to show that he has changed, and he is not his father. Every time he is close to making progress, something tears him down. He is loyal and is willing to give up hockey to prove he isn’t who everyone thinks he is. My heart ached for him; he felt so bad about himself and how he was treated because of his father, and a past he couldn’t tell people about. No one took the time to get to know him; they just made assumptions.

This book was a good update following some of her later Hawkeyes books. I enjoyed the relationship with JP and Cammy and it only seemed a bit forced.

Cute story, but the whole shoot out to leave was weird and unneeded. Also the dad was overprotective in an unhealthy way. Idk why we (and every supporting character) were suppose to act like it wasn’t incredibly unhealthy for him to be the literal reason his daughter’s heart was broken.

ARC review of Match Penalty by Kenna King
Release date: 13 May 2025
OKAY JON PAUL DUMONT HAD MY HEART ON THIS ONE 😌 This book had me feeling all emotions. I was curious, heartbroken, while also kicking my feet and giggling— all from JP and Cammy’s chemistry!! JP has it bad for Cammy and it warmed my heart when they found their way to each other 🥰 ALSO, um yes the spice was spicy (like her in his jersey spicy….🥵🥵)
The plot was simple and easy to follow, and I liked how it all pieced together. My highlight while reading this was all the feels, I was smiling, shaking my head, heartbroken and all sorts. I love it! Please go meet JP DUMONT you won’t regret it!
Thank you to Kenna King and Chasing Books PR for gifting me this eARC. All opinions in this review are my own.

Dnf @ 13%, honestly the conflict felt forced. Why the mmc left the fmc high and dry and can’t tell her the truth because of jail and a small fine potentially was a stretch.
I can’t believe this author now has multiple series about hockey and gets basic terminology and rules wrong. Feels lazy/sloppy to not have someone edit for those types of things. Also, lots of French phrases with no context as to what they might translate to.

4 Stars⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
Cammy and JP are both children of famous hockey players who were rivals. Cammy and JP also have a kind of messy past together. JP gets signed onto the Hawkeyes for a second chance to play on a hockey team and a second chance at winning over Cammy.
The chemistry between Cammy and JP was really good and kept me engaged throughout the book. Let's say I won't look at zambonis the same every again.🤭 I loved the found family atmosphere of the Hawkeyes and I appreciate that there were several callbacks to the authors previous books but I didn't have to read them before this book to know what is going on.
There is a third act breakup that was very angsty. I'm not a huge fan of that but the ending was very sweet and helped make up for the trauma.
I would definitely recommend this book for anyone looking for a good hockey romance.

JP can throw me a puck with anything written on it! I absolutely loved this read. I couldn’t put it down. From the very first chapter, I was hooked on Cammy and JP.
JP has my heart. I hated how much they kept comparing him to his father, but I loved the way he protected everyone else before himself, especially Cammy. This man fell hard for her. The way he had only eyes for her, cared for her, and just wanted to prove to her how much she meant to him was heartwarming.
Cammy, oh my goodness! I loved her. She can stand her ground. I was so happy when she stood up for herself to her father and how she protected, showed up for everyone. The way she made JP work for her had me giggling. She made this man suffer good!
I loved their banter, the spice, the friendship, and the hockey banter.
I loved every aspect of this book. It definitely brought my hockey era back.

I very much enjoyed this book. The characters, both old and new, were great. Everything from the MFC forgiving the MMC, to the resolution of the story, was a bit too fast to feel authentic…but the writing was solid and I’m looking forward to the next books
