It’s funny that a character in this book references “gay Twilight fanfiction,” because honestly that’s the best way I’d describe Wolfsong: basically Twilight with gay werewolves, just… not written as well.
I was okay with that premise, but the prose style felt repetitive and clunky. There were a couple moments I liked (like the comeback to “I guess I wasn’t a man yet” whenever the main character cried), but overall it wasn’t easy to read.
The relationships also didn’t feel earned. Everyone jumps straight to this intense level of closeness without letting the reader grow into it with them. Most of the side characters felt more like shells—“the fiery girl,” “the somber male witch,” “the maternal comfort figure”—rather than people we actually get to know.
Around 80% of the way through, the book suddenly takes a sharp turn into spice. The scenes were well-written, but it felt abrupt since the earlier tone around sex was pretty PG. I did enjoy seeing a gay romance with explicit intimacy, but it also felt like a world where everyone was conveniently bisexual and no one faced any pushback. That’s a valid choice, but it makes the story feel a little fluffy and conflict-free—missing the obstacles that would’ve made the romance and characters feel more real.
The plot is fairly predictable (very Twilight): our “ordinary” main character turns out to be secretly extraordinary, joins a family of werewolves (including his future partner), bad werewolves show up and flip things upside down, he discovers hidden strength and leadership, and of course there’s some unnecessary drama because he won’t communicate at key moments. It all works out fine, but it’s nothing new.
There’s also some serious cringe: the age-inappropriate imprinting (straight out of Breaking Dawn), the pack language, and the constant physical closeness between pack members, which just didn’t work for me.
In the end, I think I would’ve liked this book better if it had picked a lane—either leaned more into slice-of-life drama (like Twilight) or gone all-in on the erotica (which felt like a missed opportunity, given the setup of a mostly male, super-close pack). As it is, it felt stuck in between and left me unsatisfied. As it stands, I'm mildly curious about the sequels - but uncommitted to exploring them.
I was first intrigued by this book because of its cover and after finding out it was about GAY WEREWOLVES, I couldn't find a reason not to read it!
Tbh, I was expecting a swoon-worthy and light romance book, but what I got was much more complex than that.
We follow our main character, Ox, for a decade, and through that time, we can see him grow and develop some of the best relationships I've ever read about.
I think that is the thing that made this book truly shine because the relationships between the characters felt deep and magical. I could really feel the connection he has with his found family, his friends, and obviously, his love interest, which made everything feel more real.
Another thing I have to point out is the writing style. It started off simple but developed and got more complex, mirroring Ox's growth and making it even more noticeable and impactful.
This book truly had everything: funny and heartwarming moments, as well as tragic and emotional ones...
I loved everything about it and barely felt the 500 pages go by. I can't wait to read the next books!

I loved the story at first and the characters were so endearing, but the 6 year age gap…them meeting at 10 and 16 then dating at 17 and 23…especially with Ox sexualizing and getting turned on by Joe who is a MINOR. I also just got annoyed with Ox constantly bringing up how his dad left and how his dad told him he’d “always get shit.” Ox would always be mentioning it and I get it’s the root of his insecurities but damn we GET ITTTTT. You don’t have to keep mentioning it every 15 pages.
