This is officially a 3.5 for me. Book was fun overall. The relationships between the three girls felt real altho their reasons for each keeping a pretty big secret seemed kinda silly. I was kind of expecting a little more murder or horror than there actually was, but in retrospect it probably kept it from being a little too campy. The ending wasn't necessarily telegraphed, but it wasn't too hard to guess exactly what was behind everything. It was still a fun, fairly light summer read and that's exactly why I picked the book up.

Jessica Goodman can do no wrong in my opinion. I loved her first two books, and her newest was one of my most anticipated books of 2022 — especially since it takes place at a summer camp!

THE COUNSELORS is about an elite summer camp where three best friends met. Now Goldie, Imogen, and Ava are back as counselors. Goldie has been desperate to be back at camp with her friends, and is hoping she can keep her dark secret hidden. But then Heller, the boy who shattered Goldie’s heart ends up dead in the lake at camp, and Goldie will not stop until she has answers.

I completely devoured this one. The story reminded me of so many things I loved about camp, while also having a ✨killer✨ plot. It’s fast paced with short chapters, and it alternates between past and present. It’s a fun element that the camp is elite — Goldie is the only camper/counselor from the area, while everyone else comes from rich families and goes to prep schools. While they are from different worlds, the three girls have a bond that can’t be broken. Each of them have something to hide, and the secrets kept me on the edge of my seat. I truly couldn’t put it down!

Summer camp settings are one of my favorite tropes to read, and this one executed it perfectly! I loved that The Counselors had elements of both contemporary fiction and thrillers. There’s an overarching mystery but the friendship between the three girls is also central to the plot. The ending was a bit of a twist but also felt entirely plausible, something you don’t always get in thrillers. If you’re looking for a quick read in the form of a young adult thriller, this one is for you!

3.5, rounded up. The mystery of this all fell a touch flat. The whole culprit reveal felt a little rushed and lackluster, after drawing the mystery out so far. But the nostalgia for summer camp makes a setting & friendships like this land for me

I feel a bit conflicted about this one. Generally I liked it: the writing is really good, the mystery is intriguing, and I liked the emphasis on close female friendships.

Unfortunately I was not the biggest fan of Goldie, for reasons that are brought up pretty early but are still kind of spoilery:
SpoilerShe takes the fall for a horrific accident when she’s been dating her boyfriend for a few months and effectively ruins her life for a guy. A guy who clearly is not worth it, even though later on we’re told he still loved her and felt guilty about the whole thing. No, sorry, but Goldie was incredibly naive and this dude was the worst and you cannot convince me otherwise.
She wasn’t the worst MC out there and I did root for her, but I also felt like she was kind of flat.

I also did not like the “why” behind the mystery. It felt very random and out of place.

This is my first Jessica Goodman book and I like her style, so I’ll definitely be reading her previous books. But this one was a bit of a letdown.

This was fun but got annoying and downright silly at the end. A good one to listen to while doing something menial around the house, the book equivalent of microwave popcorn - not the best but I mean I’ll still eat it and not think too hard about whether it’s good or not.
