I think I am over thrillers set at summer camps for a while. I have read a handful in the last few years and they have all started to blend together in my mind. The Counselors was not a bad read by any means, but it just wasn’t super exciting or original. My three-star rating is an “it's not you, it's me” situation. If the blurb sounds good to you, go ahead and try this one. I just need a break from this very specific type of book.

So emotional. Imo, it isn't tense or dark at all. It's very *teen show,* just so many times when you want to yell, dude, be smart about this, why are you doing that, etc etc.

Some YA books are great for everyone and some YA books are best for an actual YA audience. I think this was the later. It was a fun, light thriller with good reminiscing of the camp days and it had a lot of lessons about friendship. But there weren't many surprises along the way, it was easy to guess the killer, and the main character fell kind-of flat. I was hoping for much more slashing along the lines of Clown in a Cornfield, but alas, Clown in a Cornfield this was not. :)

Goldie, a lower middle class townie, has spent every summer of her life attending a summer camp for wealthy kids for free. When something tragic happens during the winter, and Goldie takes the blame, those events follow her back to camp. Can she still enjoy her summer, embrace camp life, and maintain her friendship with two best friends while the specter of all of their pasts loom?

I'm having a case of the winter scaries so I wanted something summery and mysterious, and this absolutely delivers on all fronts. Goldie's character was perfectly executed, multilayered, and gaining the awareness about the world and her place within it. She comes to terms with the rampant classism carried by her beloved camp, the consequences of making decisions based solely on young love, and the painful reality that those we think we can trust are almost never exactly who they claim to be. The mystery/thriller aspect kept me so intrigued and, while I did guess the outcome, I had an amazing time discovering all of the threads that lead there. Goodman also handled the time jumping in this book very well, so it never got confusing or irritating.
