Did not finish. Silly and poorly written. Was something lost in translation?
Great idea and I enjoyed the characters, but a little wordy and complicated. Took a long time to get to the places you hoped it would go. Some of that could be a translation problem.
When I saw this book in the bookstore, I just had to buy it. Both the cover and the title made it very appealing, and the fact that it made me think of "the hundred year old man who climbed out of the window and disappeared" surely contributed to it as well. Funny enough it was this exact resemblance that made me wait to start reading it. I loved the 100 year old man and somehow I was scared that I would be disappointed if this book turned out to be not as good. Well, I was wrong to wait. The book is splendid. And yes of course, there are some similarities with Jonasson's popular book, but I found it truly entertaining and very funny. The plot is ingenious and the characters are very well developed, I dare say even more than in the 100 year old man. The story seemed more feasible to me too - I must admit that I had my doubts about the elephant in the 100 year old man - and the book also made me realise how us, younger people, look upon older generations sometimes (and how they get away with stuff consequently). I loved reading this book a lot and will now read it again, but this time in Swedish, where it called "Kaffe med rån". Een aanrader!
"Kaffe med rån" is het eerste boek in de reeks over de "pensionärsliga" van Catharina Ingelman Sundberg. Een bijzonder grappig boek over een groep misnoegde bejaarden die zich niet kunnen vinden in de manier waarop ze in het ouderlingentehuis worden behandeld. Nadat ze een reportage zien over de Zweedse gevangenissen en vaststellen dat gedetineerden het eigenlijk beter hebben dan zij zelf, vatten ze het plan op om zelf achter de tralies te belanden. Ze beramen een ware diefstal in het museum en maken daarbij handig gebruik van het feit dat ze er met hun grijze haren en rollators niet bepaald verdacht uitzien. Wat volgt is een grappig, vlot te lezen verhaal vol met avonturen van de vijfkoppige grijze bende.
Het boek doet in sommige opzichten denken aan "de 100 jarige man die uit het raam klom en verdween", doch ik vind "kaffe med rån" veel beter. Dat ligt waarschijnlijk aan het feit dat het verhaal plausibeler en realistischer is dan dat van de 100-jarige man, waar ik toch wel wat problemen had met die olifant. Verder zijn de vijf verschillende oudjes bijzonder sterk uitgediept met elk hun eigen typische karakter en gevoeligheden. Tot slot doet het boek je stilstaan bij hoe de maatschappij, en dan vooral de jongere generaties, kijkt naar de derde leeftijd. Wake-up call! Nooit zal ik nog een oude dame op de trein zomaar "onschuldig" noemen ;-)

De eerste keer gaf ik vier sterren. Nu drie. Maar de waardering voor de plot en de karakters blijft even groot.

Although I liked the story itself I did get a bit fed up with the coincidental happenings that affected the plot.
A cute story line and not a bad read if you can overlook how poorly it is written. Perhaps it looses something in the translation?
Before I knew that I would be unable to attend this month's book club, I checked out this book from the library. Then when I was returning another, overdue book, the librarian renewed this book for me. After all that, I felt kind of obligated to read it!
While there were some amusing and realistic parts about old age ("Old People Are Capable"), I found The Little Old Lady... pretty silly. I didn't find it particularly well-written, perhaps due to translation from the original Swedish? There was a lot going on: the group of five elderly choir members from the retirement home, each with their own story ; the director of the retirement home and Nurse Barbara; the police investigators; the college student hotel maid; fellow prisoners, including Juro of the Yugoslav mafia.

⭐️⭐️⭐️/5. When conditions deteriorate at their nursing home, Martha and her friends decide that prison must be better. So, they set out to pull of an art heist. Of course, they don’t want to stay in prison forever. They will be sure to be the good kind of criminal. The pacing is slow, but the story was an easy one.

While I enjoyed this book, I did find it too be far too long. I enjoyed the characters and their adventures though!
