although a little bit slow to catch me, by the time the story really kicked in I was breathless with pain and understanding for Jayne

This was so perfect and amazing it only got better the more I read she balanced every aspect so amazingly it was overwhelming and intense but cathartic and holy plus i felt like I was in nyc experiencing those feelings all over again

both main characters were insufferable up until chapter 45. from there onwards i actually enjoyed reading how they were fixing themselves. i wish they had done it earlier.

the writing style just wasn't for me— it feels too contemporary, with too much internet slang, i guess.

Wow I want to ugly sob because all the experiences in the book feels so personal and raw. I see myself and I see my family. I feel the trauma like it’s my own. It’s just so beautifully written despite the vulgarity and bluntness.

I liked following the characters growth. I don’t know tons about Asian family dynamics, so this felt like a more intimate introduction. This book made me laugh, it made me mad, it made me proud. I enjoyed it.

I wanted to love this. I loved the heavy topics, the moments of feeling emotions I didn't think were possible reading from a book, but I felt no closure with the ending and I almost DNFed it. Lots of character development, but the plot wasn't a huge part of this book. Again, I wish I loved it as much as everyone else, but it just wasn't for me.

Choi is a talented, eloquent wordsmith. The first-person narrative resonates with a strong, rhythmic voice that flows seamlessly from sentence to sentence, even when fragmented, which I feel is uncommon. I can't recall a time during the read that I stumbled over structure.

The tone is kind of gritty with grey characters and sisters who maybe don't have the healthiest relationship but still care for each other on some level. I dig these kind of elements, personally.

The plot is pretty slow. Choi favors a literary style of storytelling with Yolk, so the focus is a little more on the characters than the plot, with flashbacks or other little characterization scenes interspersed between the plot points. I'm not too big on this style of novel, so I did lose patience and start skimming more than halfway through until the last 2-4 chapters. That said, this is one of the few instances where I walked away from such a novel having overall felt good about the experience.
