yet another mashed potato book that’s been on my tbr for a long ass time, this time bc it’s a story about two sisters and one of them gets cancer and I was not sure if I could handle that subject matter lmao

but it turns out that wasn’t such a big deal bc this book had so much other weirdly disjointed stuff going on. like we could’ve dove so much deeper into each individual theme - the June/Jayne sister dynamic, the cancer story itself (I wanted to know how the surgery turned out for June!!!), the ED issues, the mother/daughter dynamics, Jayne’s boy problems. instead it feels like I just kind of dipped my toes into each of those areas and it all felt a little shallow because of that

I did kinda enjoy the style of the writing - it felt like the strangest mashup of YA and adult fiction to me, and somehow it worked out pretty well. I just wish I could’ve explored more of the themes in this book :/

also we love representation for the girlies who cry after a sexual encounter bc the concept of a man deeply caring for them is absolutely foreign to them lmao

Took awhile to get into and the writing was confusing especially in the beginning. New characters were introduced as if you should know who they were so I spent a lot of time flipping back to see if I missed something. I didn’t like it for probably the first half but then it did come together nicer towards the end. The characters are very practically flawed which is relatable thinking back to my 20s.

I had to finally DNF this book. I think it is an expertly written book, and I think that Choi has an acute understanding of interpersonal problems, grief, sister relationships, and eating disorders.

I personally had to DNF this because I found it so triggering to read. It's okay to not force yourself through a book if you find it harmful to your mental health. The main characters struggle with feeling unlovable and not good enough, her self-loathing feels so real and so familiar, that I just had to put it down.

So I'm not rating it because I truly think this is a case of "this book isn't for me." I don't think that reflects the quality of the book.

This book was definitely interesting. It was hard for me to see the light at the end of the tunnel but I do like a sisterhood book!

what a gut-wrenching, warm book.

Damn!! What a novel. It hit so hard #eldestdaugherasian. the character dynamics were so rich, and I could see so clearly how Jane is this young girl that wanted to be seen so badly, both physically and literally, by everyone in her world that she was willing to change her body in the most gruesome ways for crumbs of recognition. And I think that just comes with being the younger sister of this older sibling who is initially so excellent but also harboring secrets of her own. Wow.
