There were good take aways from the book that would be great to implement, but some of the things she taught/suggested just don’t seem right for our family. Not my favorite, but I can see good things in her ideals.

I've been looking into homeschooling, reading books and asking friends about their experiences.  And this book was so good. Full of real life anecdotes about finding what works for you, as well as some really sound advice. I felt like the author was very inclusive and very forgiving in her homeschool ideology (for lack of a better term).

I honestly feel like even if I don't end up homeschooling, this book will help me be a better parent. Homeschooling and parenting do go hand in hand, after all.

I can't say enough good things about this book. I felt inspired, but not overwhelmed! As the author points out many times, this is not just another system! It's somewhat of a philosophy of home education--an eclectic one. What I love about this book is that it's not just about homeschooling. It's life, parenting, learning, and being. I think everyone should read this! I'm definitely going to be re-reading it, if not in a year then maybe in the next six months. Ms. Bogart, thank you for this gift to the world of your beautiful and encouraging prose.

Inspirational read before another year of home education. All about connection and practical ways to put all the research about how humans learn into practice

This book gives twelve “super powers” to think of and plan around when parenting/homeschooling. My favorite portions of the book were when Julie Bogart discussed ways to keep ourselves in check and to appreciate what we are already doing, what is already working for us. I can definitely see myself returning to its pages to be inspired and evaluate how I am connecting with my children as I educate them at home.

Great tips + certainly shifted my perspective! Though definitely written for the full-on homeschooler though.

Incredible book.

Started out great, but fell flat for me pretty quickly.

She and I don’t see eye to eye on many, many things. If you and your family use and/or need a schedule or curriculum or anything that resembles order, this book may not be for you. Many times she made me feel like what I was doing was wrong but then she would say something and I would realize just how different her life and lifestyle are from mine and that neither of are wrong, just different. I wanted to quit the book multiple times but kept at it because she did have a few ideas that I plan on working into our homeschool life. It was the hope of more of these to come that kept me going. I feel like my time could’ve been better spent reading a book by someone my lifestyle aligns with though.

I was excited to read this and I really wanted to like it more than I did! I think that if she had written of tales from her homeschooling experience and let me pick out the philosophies that stood out to me I would have really enjoyed it more. It felt repetitive or just drawn out too much maybe? (mentioning something and then in the next chapter spelling it out) I did like the quotes she chose and they have led to a reading list for me!
From hearing Julie on podcasts and reflecting on the reading for a bit I think that she has the best intentions of being that friend that comes along side you to champion you and there is no harm in that. I'm going to choose to think of her as my "Dotty," my friend with her own unique perspective that I can draw inspiration from.
