What do you get when you cross a criminal barrister with a pen and a character desperate for revenge?

A GREAT thriller.

This new-to-me author has penned a compelling and rich story that is brimming with insight.

It’s no surprise that Harriet Tyce has mastered intriguing characters; after all, she’s had years of career experience, resulting in an understanding of human behaviour. The tension she creates with ‘unreliability’ is stellar. Once I tuned in to the mind games, I was hooked…smirking as I read…only to discover that BAM - Tyce got me!

Tcye’s creative forces utilized in her career have enhanced this plot. Her proficiency and her love affair with words have produced a dark and twisty story with unbeatable plotting and a finale that will send you reeling. I'm still scratching my head!!!!

I’m glad I didn’t get an invite to the party at Regent Terrace!

Tyce expertly explores the dangers of confronting our past and the deadly wake we can leave when we try to take things into our own hands in an effort at absolution and restoration.

❗ Oh, and some warnings: it’s a gruesome opening and there’s some kinky sex play.

2.5 stars.
both main characters were so dislikeable. the whole thing about sylvie molesting a child felt so random and weird where it was put; I think it would've been a cool plot point but maybe not in the middle of the book when there's already something else intense going on. also didn't love at the end the implication that everything sylvie said about tess was actually meant to be about her. makes the whole book sound very unreliable since it was all in sylvies pov. I wouldn't have had an issue with an unreliable narrator if it suited the type of book but in my opinion it didn't. even thinking about the other option, that both tess and marcus used sylvies death as an excuse to blame her for everything bad they've done... no words.
anyway the plot twist with garreth was actually interesting even if the way he revealed himself felt a bit like a disney channel movie.
overall, not my type of book but it was good to pass the time.

I'm not going to write a huge review as I feel many others have expressed the same views as me. I wanted to like this book, but there is too much wrong with it. Main points I took away:

The characters are very unlikeable, especially the best friend who comes across as extremely selfish throughout.

The ending felt very rushed. Reasons for the main crime and others mentioned throughout were briefly rounded up with no real explanations.

I think I will give this author a miss in the future!

This was well written in a way that was easy to follow and easy to picture. It was dramatic and quite a page turner, but the ending was a little predictable so by the time the climax happened, it was underwhelming.
On one hand, Sylvie could get a little annoying by how self-absorbed she is, but on the other, I didn’t like that she’s essentially being punished for being ambitious. Also Tess was a terrible friend and person in general and while she’s ill, I hated that she’s portrayed as just a victim in the end. Who the hell lies about being pregnant and fakes a miscarriage?
