It was a slow starter for me… mainly with Christmas and everything my concentration levels were low. Once I got going, I couldn’t put it down. Some bits I guessed but still a great story, although the ending was a little strange/confusing for me but I wouldn’t let that put you off reading it.
A bit of a slow start but glad I stuck with it. I thought I’d figured out how the story was going to go and the twist but it turns out I didn’t have a clue about either. A very enjoyable read.

The story starts off as a crime scene: a lavish party of a couple who wanted to renew their vows in front of around twenty guests and someone is dead.
Sylvie is a high powered lawyer who has ambitions of being appointed to the position of judge. She feels like her life is going just as she planned, plus she’s in a healthy relationship with a man named Gareth.
Tess is Sylvie’s high school friend , after Tess learns she has brain cancer, decides she wants Sylvie to help tie up a ‘loose’ end from their teenage years. You see Tess and Sylvia were involved in a murder case as witnesses at the court which then changed a young girl’s life. Tess wants Sylvia to reconnect with that girl to clear her conscious. Sylvie isn’t thrilled with Tess asking her to do this she wants the past to stay in the past. Tess also asks Sylvie if she will tell her estranged husband, Marcus of her diagnosis. Tess hopes Marcus after hearing the diagnosis will renew their vows and move forward. But as Tess keeps pushing Sylvie to confront the skeletons they hid in their closets, it seems someone is determined to make Sylvie pay for the secrets on their past. As the clock ticks towards midnight it’s soon obvious someone wants revenge and the outcome is murder.

Can you say bored?
That's what I was. Bored.
1. If I had to read one more time that sylvie wanted to be a judge, I was going to scream. It wasn't relevant to the story, and none were any of the trial chapters ot was just more filler fluff for an excuse to make sylives life a snowballnof a shit show. It was just a filler fluff that I didn't give 2 shits about.
2. Tess. My god did I hate this character and yes, yes she did play the cancer cards. Manipulative cow
3. Sylvie... How old is this woman 40+ and she reads like a 20-year-old. I'd never make her a judge that's for sure with the way she ran her life. Also, considering she is clearly a barrister/ judge and can't recall section 67 of the serious crimes act. It's just laughable at this point. I can honestly say I didn't connect with a single character and at one point thought of using the pages as toilet paper.
4. Gareth. I found him immediately obvious that he was innit for other reasons than romantic. Of course he was.
I forced myself to read this and carry on, and I wish I hadn't. You don't even know when this is set and ot seems neither did the author. And the timeliness adjusted every so often, and the fact the author thought she was doing something by not saying whom the victims were wasn't what I thought it was going to be. I've read better thrillers, and this wasn't one of them. We could have picked this up straight on nye and given us the back story. This felt like a shit episode of judge render followed by a very cliche ending

Sometimes you read a book and think Wow! and sometimes you think... what was the point in that....
I just don't get the point of this book, it was bleak and in my opinion pointless

3.5 ⭐ rounded up
What do you get when you cross a criminal barrister with a pen and a character desperate for revenge?
A GREAT thriller.
This new-to-me author has penned a compelling and rich story that is brimming with insight.
It’s no surprise that Harriet Tyce has mastered intriguing characters; after all, she’s had years of career experience, resulting in an understanding of human behaviour. The tension she creates with ‘unreliability’ is stellar. Once I tuned in to the mind games, I was hooked…smirking as I read…only to discover that BAM - Tyce got me!
Tcye’s creative forces utilized in her career have enhanced this plot. Her proficiency and her love affair with words have produced a dark and twisty story with unbeatable plotting and a finale that will send you reeling. I'm still scratching my head!!!!
I’m glad I didn’t get an invite to the party at Regent Terrace!
Tyce expertly explores the dangers of confronting our past and the deadly wake we can leave when we try to take things into our own hands in an effort at absolution and restoration.
❗ Oh, and some warnings: it’s a gruesome opening and there’s some kinky sex play.
If I had to highlight a disappointing area:
