A bigger improvement from the first book if only for the additional plot line of the Baron and his family, the fact that the FMC is of appropriate age, and thus, we’re finally getting into application.
We needed some reprieve from the temple and the “schooling”—it was almost as if we too were learning alongside the FMC. And while that can be a great tool to divulge information about the world, it can certainly slow the pace waaaay down. It also helps with new characters and dialogue, lessening the likelihood of inner dialogue as we get so much of it with the FMC while she’s in training and trying to understand her Path.
I can say that I do also appreciate the bond more between the FMC and MMCs now that we get more time with them, but still, something is missing. Most of the conflict is internal (with the characters feeling inadequate within themselves) and I almost wish there was some fighting amongst the crew. If only for entertainment, and not realistic expectations. It would have helped the pacing and tone for sure.

idk yall. i don’t think this is for me.
i want to like this series so badly, but between the writing and the lack of plot progression in this book, i’m feeling stuck.
the anver plot line started and ended in almost the same exact spot, with the same exact conversations happening a million fucking times. we’re beating a dead horse here.
ela beinga destroyer is not surprising nor unexpected (they need to balance the group), and yet that took up almost the entire ending of the book. it seemed like a fabricated issue. i truly do not understand this angle of ela believing he has to be perfect all the time. where did this come from???? he says it a lot, but i don’t feel like we’ve seen him struggling to not be perfect. nari certainly hasn’t asked him to be, and nobody else seems to give a shit. i don’t get it.
i’m happy that wraythe and talin got more time in this book, but honestly all of the smut has been so tame (except for ela’s work towards the end) and it felt so repetitively. i just want her and zeal to fuck and get it out of their systems at this point. i would’ve even taken a jamik x amerlee scene to break this up. i’m just bored. i feel like this entire book was filled. nari finally choosing her path meant nothing bc it’s the same shit she’s been repeating the entire series so far, and i still don’t understand it? like what are the actionable steps for her to take? i don’t understand yall. i want to, but i dont. i think the road ends here for me.

Definitely less driving than the previous book. There isn't one overarching problem that brings the whole book together and definitely feels like two separate plots.
The first half was less than invigorating, and it is about Nari's teachers being a dick to her.
Then there is lots of smut.
Then the second half is a far more engaging and about Darkest Night, with Ela facing the darker parts of himself and Nari doing some political navigation with Talin's family.
I will say there is, however, 15 chapters of straight smut tho, so worth it just for that.

Kept reading book two thinking the character development foundation would be set and we’d get into some plot but just didn’t happen. The book mostly consisted of something happening to one character then they retell what happened to someone else ..over and over again. Nothing happened in this book. I still finished it because I love how sex is discussed in the book and how they communicate in an open healthy way. But that’s kinda all it is; chatting about feelings. Another gripe is they’re all perfect in every situation, and always say / do the right thing. A bit boring. Maybe things will get goin in book 3 but unfortunately I won’t be there to see that happen.
500 pages of getting to know the characters a bit more but not much more? I still breezed through it but there wasn’t much that happened.

A little boring. The dynamic between Zeal and her is a little off-putting? Not sure I’ll continue.
