While I thought the book had a lot of interesting things to say, I felt it could have been at least 20% shorter.

Densely informative if not a little overwhelming and slightly pessimistic as far as outlook on the future of humankind - though perhaps more accurate and realistic than I'm ready to admit/accept!
this was infuriating to read. i legitimately was shouting ‘no!’ at harari more than once. considering i didn’t like ‘sapiens’ i’ll defend myself in reading this by saying i bought a copy before i’d read sapiens and had heard good things.
the danger with someone like harari is that he’s clearly a smart, highly qualified guy and that lends a certain weight to what he says. i therefore think he has a responsibility to be careful not to mislead his readers. he is not remotely careful. just like with sapiens, he consistently presents opinion as fact and philosophy as science and sociology.
it’s not that i necessarily take issue with his opinions, some of the time i was with him, other times i strongly disagreed but i can absolutely live with that in a book. the problem comes when harari makes bold philosophical statements with zero or very little disclaimer and next to no citation or reference.
boooo didn’t like it no more harari for me.

I find Harari very thought provoking, I didn't find Homo Deus as rivetting as the other two books I read by him: Sapiens and 21 Lessons for the 21st Century. There is a lot of the same material in Homo Deus and 21 Lessons. The Homo Deus idea is that a race of humans will be artificially and genetically enhanced this century to create a superior species of Homo Sapiens, a kind of Homo Sapiens 2.0. There is also an exploration of Dataism taking over from Humanism as intelligence moves from humans to the data flow used by algorithms and machine intelligence. We are living in interesting times.
