This chapter book is really cute! Sydney the skunk and Taylor the hedgehog live together in a cozy burrow under Miss Nancy's potting shed. Sydney is content to sit and contemplate life, but Taylor longs for adventure, and decides the pair should travel. Though Sydney is reluctant, he gamely agrees, and starts preparing for an expedition. Taylor, faced with the reality of actually traveling, starts to get nervous, but his friend reassures and encourages him to follow his dream. The two set out, exploring The Whole Wide World (the surrounding area), try hunting for food, meeting new creatures, fend off a ferocious (or, at least, noisy) dog, and find their way back home after having many adventures. Throughout, they support each other, taking turns being brave and not-so-brave, and showing that adventures with a friend can be great fun. The illustrations are sweet and adorable, and fill out the story well. This looks like it will be a fun series!

Sydney and Taylor have my whole heart. This delightful new series is perfect for emergent readers.
The story is fun, full of adventure and robust vocabulary, there are chapters! Reminds me of Lauren Castillo's wonderful My Friend Hedgehog: The Story of Us.

I received an ARC courtesy of HMH in exchange for my honest review.

I am a huge fan of Sydney and Taylor and I think kids are really going to enjoy these books. Perfect for beginning readers.

A nod to All-of-a-Kind-Family perhaps? Title tribute or not, this is an emotionally resonant little gem with a well-paced string of adventures that celebrates the joy of the unknown and the comfort of home.

So before anything about the book itself, I find myself wondering whether the character names are an homage to [a:Sydney Taylor|5323|Sydney Taylor|https://images.gr-assets.com/authors/1417923999p2/5323.jpg], or if that's just accidental.

But names aside, Sydney and Taylor echo many of the great Easy Reader Friendships ([b:Frog and Toad|537296|Frog and Toad Are Friends (Frog and Toad, #1)|Arnold Lobel|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1388179033l/537296._SY75_.jpg|1231880], [b:Mouse and Mole|6791013|Mouse and Mole, Fine Feathered Friends|Wong Herbert Yee|https://i.gr-assets.com/images/S/compressed.photo.goodreads.com/books/1347694028l/6791013._SX50_.jpg|6994968], [b:Elephant and Piggie|515904|There Is a Bird on Your Head! Sydney is a calm homebody, willing to take on adventure for Taylor, who is more anxious but who has bigger dreams. It's Taylor, a hedgehog, who wants to see the whole wide world, but it's Sydney the skunk who plans and executes the adventure and who saves Taylor from any number of threats large and small. The two friends work well together and the illustrations really are just charming.
