better to leave unpunished a guilty person than to condemn an innocent one.
it took me forever to finish this one, enjoyed it just enough to finish it, would've prefered to read it as an audiobok I think.

surprisingly compelling and very readable.
I liked the point about how french peasents didn't have mirrors. Think about all the times we check ourselves out in the mirror, how much we primp and preen. We know so much about ourselves from our reflections (and then comparing ourselves to others). Imagine thinking your appearence was whatever people repetedly told you & 'stock sayings' about appearence.

This historical fiction is based upon true events written by a judge during the 16th century. This story is great because it shows the emotions of regular people during this century through the bizarre story of Martin Guerre

A generally interesting history of the Martin Guerre case. For those familiar with the 1982 movie of the same name, this book provides additional social context, touching on how ethnicity, class, and religion may have played into the outcome of the case. At times the author leans too heavily on unsupported inferences of what might have been, and at other times I don’t feel that she fully connects all of the points that she lays out.
