That was a disappointment :( I think this series has hit a bit of a slump. A lot of my favorite characters were absent, too. And Bess, we need to talk about your (apparent?) taste in men.

The plot to this one felt derivative of some of the earlier books in the series, so I didn't enjoy it quite as much.

Really enjoyed this next book in the Bess Crawford series! The audiobooks are fantastic. My only complaint is that Simon made only small appearances in this book. The mystery was good though and kept me listening. Looking forward to the next book.

I like the Bess Crawford books better than the Ian Rutlidge books, but they're still pretty hit or miss. This was more of a miss for me. I really didn't care about the mystery at all. It didn't feel original and I found it rather boring. Definitely one of the weaker entries into the series, which is disappointing since the previous book was an improvement over books 5 and 6.

Received from Edelweiss in exchange for review.

Why do I keep reading these books. why have they gotten so bad. I used to love the Bess Crawford series. They have always been unbelievable, but at least had a fun plot. The last couple of installments have had barely any mystery, poorly developed characters, and Bess is basically just a ridiculous busy body that needs to mind her own business. Her motivations make absolutely no sense.

When an exhausted French officer is found at the foot of a tree, he is taken to Bess Crawford's station. She is puzzled when he shouts out in German, but it is pointed out to her that he is probably Alsatian, an area that is currently held by Germany. He is exhausted and lacks boots. His feet are badly injured. His uniform is unusable so he is given an American uniform temporarily. Then he is sent to a clinic in Paris to recuperate. Bess is sent to the same clinic after she is wounded by a sniper. Despite assurances that he is, no doubt, Alsatian, Bess wonders about him. Her wound is not serious, so she decides to investigate. Along the way she is assisted by an army captain who says he is there at her father's behest. He claims to be in Paris looking for deserters, but Bess has her suspicions. The war is ending, but the Germans are making their last stand. It should be interesting to see where the authors (Charles Todd is actually a pseudonym for a mother/son writing team) take Bess in post WW1 Europe.

Hmm. I'm beginning to think that there may never be any further character development in this series. It's a fine puzzle of a mystery, with not a heck of a lot beneath the surface. Sigh. I was hoping for much more.

Rather confusing trying to follow the storyline in this one, and Bess comes across as just plain nosy. Plus, three different officers helping her seems a bit far-fetched.
