If this is the first Katherine Rundell book you have read, you will probably love it. Having read several others, I have to confess being slightly disappointed. The writing is as superb as ever but the characters did not feel as memorable as in, for example, The Explorer (how is that scoring less than 4 on StoryGraph?!). I also found it just a bit derivative of other fantasy novels and it just didn’t capture my imagination in the way her other novels did. The last part is gripping and it t up well for sequels. Still very much worth reading but I would pick her other books over this one.

I was really excited for the book when I started. It promised to be a fun romp about magical creatures. And it delivered. I love reading about how certain animals behaved and why.
About halfway through, though, the animals stopped being living, breathing animals and devolve into either mindless monsters or talking, sentient beings. At the same time, a more interesting villain is replace a personality-less “Ultimate Evil.” These things make it feel like a generic fantasy novel. Not bad, just more generic.

A cute charming magical world that stays true to traditional fantasy themes. While it dances around concepts such as the chosen one and how the magic is alive in the world it’s self. I am a sucker for a good sacred tree.
I read this with my son and we both loved it. Two kids from different worlds unite to try to save the magical beings and the magic which they rely on. There is a scene at the end which felt very much of this moment in our world. I actually shed real tears, so be forewarned that it's not all happy, but it was beautiful.
