Ganking a whoooooooole lot of Ursula's shit here. That's not inherently a bad thing but I don't know that it's used to a worthwhile end here. What if Earthsea had more different creatures. Narration was fine but suffered in the audiobook format because I want to look at the beasts and creatures and I was aurally told there are supposed to be illustrations of them available to me. But the Libby app did not let me see them.
I dislike that this book starts with dual POVs and then hones in on the boy once they are in the same space. I understand why this was done based on later events but still leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Some very obvious twists in here but probably at a level acceptable for a middle-grade novel - kids could feel clever for discovering these twists before they are announced.
I like how the book handles life and death. The climate crisis metaphor is heavy-handed but not ineffective. Has issues with saying some creatures are Good and some are Evil. And the distribution of sapience among them seems arbitrary. Could be fun for a kid but not a great use of my time. I would recommend a child to read A Wizard of Earthsea before I would recommend this, but I'm not sure I could recommend this to an Earthsea fan looking for more because it feels soooo derivative.

This feels so incredibly epic and has great messages for our reality too. I can’t wait to see where it goes!

Oh wow, I'm not a target reader for this book, but I loveeeeee it, really really love it, it's like reading my first fantasy book when I was a kid. It's a fun full of adventure and magic and amazing creatures read. Just pure magic through and through. Totally highly recommend to anyone who's looking for fun fantasy read.
What I love:
- The story. It's a fantasy read with the "chosen one" mixed with found family trope. The adventure was starting from the beginning and there's no stopping, no dull moments, heart racing from the get go.
- Amazing magical creatures and of course dragons, not just big scary dragon, there's also a cute adorable dragon. I can imagine the beauty and the creepiness of the creatures, some I can imagine their smell, it's like I can really smell them and feel their skin textures, yup the description is superb.
- Mal and Christopher and Gelifen and Nighthand and Irian and Ratwin and Jacques and Naravirala. I just love them all, I want to hug them all.
- All the feelings. I laugh, I smile and I cried, yup I cried at some parts. This roller coaster of emotion is just awesome.
What I don't like: NONE.
