de Muriel's sophomore novel doesn't quite measure up to the grandeur of his first, Strings of Murder. The story felt like it needed editing, the chases went on overlong for my taste, and the plot was fairly convoluted. I wish the ending was worth it, but to me the payoff wasn't quite there. I get the sense this novel was a setup for future storylines.
It's not a bad read, and certainly this series is clever and highly entertaining, but with six non-linear books in the series, readers could easily skip this one.

Reading this felt like an absolute fever-dream I was very tempted to rate it 5 stars just because I couldn’t believe the kind of *tasty content* A Fever of the Blood delivered. Also really glad that the language felt a little more carefully chosen than in book 1. I am really looking forward to the next books in this series!

Nine Nails McGray and Ian Frey investigate the murder of a young nurse working at the asylum where McGray's sister lives. The suspected murdered? The local Lady Ardglass's son who was rumored dead but really has been secretly living at the asylum for the past several years. McGray and Frey's search takes them to Lancashire England where witchcraft abounds.

I always enjoy these two idiots and their bickering (although maybe I am the bigger idiot for still thinking they will surely end up together), this adventure wasn’t quite as intense or suspenseful as the first, but still great for world and character building (and angst of course). The author note at the end always adds so much to the plot devices.
I can’t wait for the mayhem of the third book when the duo return to Scotland
