Very enjoyable but at the same time, very sad. A tragic love story with a hard-hitting(if not entirely unexpected) ending. Her memories of the concentration camps and her part in it are very intense and the fact that she goes from not really accepting that she'd done anything wrong to her suicide at the end was very well written.
Sad, poignant, tragic and beautiful, all rolled into one great novel.

Character development was a problem for me. I didn't care about any of the characters, nor did I understand what their lives were really like, so it was hard to empathize or understand their actions.

I always hated reading translations and always prefer reading works in their original languages or that the author is the translator or assisted in the translation because a lot can be lost in translation. I work as an interpreter and translator so I can understand the challenges the translator faced as well as majoring in literature. So that background would allow me to critique this novel. I read the English translation of that "renowned" novel which was made into a major motion picture.
Being it a translation I can't fully critique the writing style or content but we will assume that the translation is the replica of the original book. The author divided the book into 3 parts mainly signifying the 3 different stages of the protagonist. The chapters are small so it quite helped. At times the book was boring so I looked forward to the end of that short chapter so I can feel a sense of accomplishment.
