This was... Disappointing. Too much debauchery for me.

*Update: I haven't stopped thinking about this book since I finished it. When that happens, I take it as a good sign. I'm increasing my rating from a 3.75 to a 4.5. Although I think some aspects of the novel could have been worked on and fleshed out more, I am 100 percent captivated by Lex Croucher's writing.*

Reputation is like a love child between Mean Girls and a Jane Austen novel. Toxic friendships and rebellious youths mirror our own experiences at that age, and answers the question no asked but still happy to receive, how would Mean Girls play out if set in the Regency Era?

With a cast of characters, so deeply nasty and no redeeming qualities, I was sure this book wasn't for me. Normally I love reading morally gray characters (they're my favs!), but either its a testament to Lex Croucher's writing or an unfortunate side effect of it being her very first novel, the mean, petty, and bratty characters were hard to swallow. Its not until the last 100 pages where I felt some relief from the toxicity of Georgianna's "friendships".

Ultimately, it was Lex's writing and those last few pages that saved this book for me. I do wish that Frances and her swath of equally unlikable friends had more of a lesson to learn, still what little that was learned helped bring about a satisfying conclusion to a frustrating, yet delightful read.

Imagine Mean Girls but in Regency England… and you have Reputation. Georgiana is new to the neighborhood, staying with her aunt and uncle after pretty much being abandoned by her negligent parents, and she’s bored out of her mind and dying for some fun and friends. She falls in with a wealthy group of heirs and heiresses and lots of debauchery ensues. This is not Jane Austen. It is a comedy with a romance plot but that’s not really the focus. The characters are diverse (people of color, on the LGBTQ+ spectrum) and messy and comical. If all of that sounds good to you, I highly recommend! I definitely enjoyed reading it.

I got such a kick out of this book. I expected drama, scandal, and parties, but I got DRAMA, heavy topics (done well), and debauchery! I loved it far more than I expected.

Georgiana is a 20-year-old, regular lady, who gets dumped off at her aunt's and uncle's place because her parents need some fresh sea air. At her very first party, she meets Frances, a higher-ranking-socially young woman, who immediately makes her feel like she is living an exciting life. Frances adopts her into her friend group, who all enjoy drinking, drugs, parties, and being just generally somewhat offensive. Georgiana goes to parties, gets plastered, and keeps running into the brooding Thomas Hawksley (who I mentally have cast as Nikesh Patel), whom her friends say is a boring stick-in-the-mud. But Georgiana doesn't agree with them, and over time, cracks begin to show in the friend group, scandals erupt, and Georgiana has to make some decisions on how and with who her time should be spent.

If you love Mean Girls, Bridgerton, and Jane Austen, then I highly recommend this book. Hawksley is a fantastic love interest with a golden heart, and Betty Walters, a friend that Georgiana reluctantly makes, is a sweet cinnamon roll that deserves the world. Georgiana isn't necessarily the most likeable, which I think makes her all the more relatable. We have an excellent Victorian villain in Frances, BIG AUNT ENERGY from Georgiana's aunt, and so. much. thick. drama. that you could swim in it. It was a wild ride, and one I didn't want to end.
