This book took me a long time to read, but on reflection, I think that is mostly down to the fact that it's in a writing style I am not used to reading. It's historical fiction, which I have not read much of until now, and after reading this book I am keen to give more of this genre a try! I enjoyed the characters and I felt like I knew them well by the end of the book, I especially loved how complex they were. I loved the humour that brought me a few unexpected and genuine laugh-out-loud moments throughout the story. It did take me a little bit to really get into the world and setting of the book, but after I was about halfway through the book, I got really invested, and the pacing really picked up for me in the second half. It's a solid story I can see myself re-reading in years to come, and I'm looking forward to reading more books in this style by the same author (and other authors too)!

It took me a little while to get started, but ended up really enjoying this. It feels a bit like if Mean Girls was set in the Regency era; similar elements of coming of age, friendship cliques etc. but with regency era societal norms.

The latter half of the book is definitely a lot more fast-paced than the first. I went from swooning over a budding romance to being heartbroken in one chapter at some point.

Definitely check the TW before reading, the book has themes of sex, sexulity, and consent. As such there are allusions to SA. That said, as someone sensitive to those themes, I feel it was well-handled.

While the back of the book compares this story to Jane Austen, Fleabag, and Bridgerton, it was really just essentially Mean Girls with a Skins twist. That’s not a bad thing, but it is worth noting that most of the characters are pretty awful and don’t really redeem themselves.

I did enjoy the main romance and the writing style is SPECTACULAR. I just found myself wishing the characters weren’t so morally gray and that at least some of the characters got some comeuppance. All in all, it’s a good choice for anybody who wants a historical take on Mean Girls with a deeper and more emotional twist. Be aware of the content warnings though!

I would completely agree with all the viewers saying this is like a regency mean girls. It’s a fun book that has the same cosy vibes as watching a rom com. I really like Lex Croucher’s writing - they make the book flow really well. My main issue with this book was the protagonist - I just really disliked Georgiana right up until the last few chapters of the book.

Do not be fooled by the cover, it’s not as lighthearted and fun as it promises.
It’s a classic coming of age story but set in the Regency period and, from other historical novels, it’s quite refreshing in its unique spin.
