I’m going to go out on a limb and dub this my favorite read of 2021! What a delightful surprise. The audiobook was recommended to me and I stumbled upon the paperback in my local secondhand store. So, I did what I’ve enjoyed a few times previously, I followed along in my paperback while being read to by the audiobook (at 1.80 speed so that I wasn’t frustrated by a slow reader). This method was a commitment at 520 pages, but worth every page.
I LOVED the Scottish narrator, the feel of a regency romance set in modern times, the artistry in each setting, the admirable characters, and… just everything. As a reader, I have to grab on to at least one character in each novel. I grabbed on to all of them in Winter Solstice. And the authors skill in describing scenes had me daydreaming of Scottish lodgings in the beautiful countryside.
Overall, this book was cozy and perfectly placed in my life during the holiday hubbub.

Sometimes we just need a sweet, innocent book. No sex. No violence. No huge family drama. This is such a wonderful, important book because it reminds me that slowing down, letting the story unfold, investing in relationships, matters. I don’t think a book like this could be written (or sold) today, but that makes me glad that we have Winter Solstice. It’s one I’ll return to in December, maybe every year.

For some reason this book took me ages to read even though I was really enjoying it. Pilcher’s books are all about coziness, tea, family relationships and cottages...all enjoyable things.
