Rosamunde Pilcher’s books are comfort reads for me. I always feel right at home and more specifically, like I want to be transported into the book, and this one was no exception. Her settings are so cozy and her characters so relatable. I’m really enjoying reading through her seasons collection.

I chose this because of the setting and the time, wanting a read over the Christmas holidays that would get me in the mood for the activities during this season. I had dim memories of reading her more-famous Shell Seekers a long time ago and enjoying it, though I couldn't tell you anything about the plot.
This book is not great literature, but I found the story engaging and liked (most of) the characters, though they seemed a little too good to be true at points. The setting was a big part of the story; it's set in a village in Scotland where life is slow and community is important. The book was written in 2000, a few years before the introduction of the smart phone, and I wondered if Lucy, the 14-year-old girl in the story, would have been as excited about hanging out with the old folks today, when social media is so pervasive and its hold on young girls is especially pernicious. Lucy had been emotionally neglected by her caregivers, but she found new confidence and belonging among people who cherished her. This was one of the best parts of this story, knowing how important that is for children and what a difference it can make for them to have at least one person who truly invests in them.
Grief, aging well (and badly), generosity vs. selfishness, hospitality, community, and faith are all important themes in this book. I recommend it as a light read that can still make you think, and even help you examine your own connection to the people around you.

Sweet story and well written. I listened to the audio version and thought the narrator sounded like the Disney live version of Cruella Deville. It was a little bit distracting.

This is a wonderful book. Its well-written and grabs your attention from the start. The characters are three-dimensional, and they become people you care about. Can’t recommend it enough.
