Very cozy read. Perfect for winter. Heart warming. A little long and redundant at times with the dialogues but overall a great read.
This is my third recent foray, after Coming Home and The Shell Seekers), into exploring the works of Rosamunde Pilcher, an author I am coming to love for her astute observations about teen girls and older women.
Simply put, Pilcher is soothing. Such a gift for description of ordinary things and situations. Her characters are highly relatable and she helps you really see these people.
Read this as an audiobook and the narrator does a fine job with the women's voices, not so much with men's voices (harder to understand). This is set in London and remote Scotland so loved hearing the local inflections.
This does culminate at Christmas, but it is not a Christmas novel per se. Rather, this is about a teen girl dealing with the aftermath of her parents' divorce and remarriage(s), not feeling wanted, an affair gone very wrong, and grief. Even more, this is about community, compassion, connection, life chapters, and new love - all supported by dogs, music and wine.
Pilcher is not overly sentimental. The threads of the story all resolve almost too nicely, but what is most impressive is how she communicates loss and loneliness as well as gentle love and new hope.
