Nobody ever expects the Spanish Inquisition last-minute Inuyasha subplot!

(Really 3.5 stars.) A solid continuation of the adventure from Book 1. I liked the new characters and the expansion of the world, though the pacing was ehhh at times and I sorely missed the Elias & Helene dynamic. I'm mostly just along for the ride at this point ᕕ(ᐛ) ᕗ

I’m a tad bit conflicted about “A Torch Against the Night”. I found the story paced fast enough and there was a lot of action, violence, and general mayhem. The author pulls emotional strings and you spend most of the book hoping there is a solution for Elias.

The conflicted part comes in the form of a sorta love triangle that was just kind of lame. It really annoyed me and made me want to wring Laia’s neck for just being that girl. I really want to hope that it is resolved and won’t rear its ugly head in the next book but I’m afraid I’ll have to see it again.

There were a few other areas in the book where I just wasn’t convinced Laia was physically strong enough to do some of the things she did, like lift Elias onto a horse, just was not feeling that…

If it wasn’t for these few issues I would have been quite happy with this segment of the story but those problems made me mark this one down a bit. I think I’ll probably read the next book, but it’s not due out until next year so we’ll just have to wait and see.

A torch against the night , was better than the first part of an ember in the ashes series with many adventures, twist & turns, nail biting moments. It was intriguing from the very beginning, & I could feel the tension, stress, betrayal, fear, sadness, love & companionship from the situations in the plot which left my heart racing. So I'm jumping into the next part right away!

After having a real blow for the first volume, I was very impatient to read the rest. Overall, I really enjoyed my reading. However, I had a little more trouble with this second volume. While there were many descriptions and explanations in the first book - I found that there everything was going a little too fast at times. I would have liked to linger a little more on some of the scenes.

I also had a bit of trouble with the character's transition through the chapters. I often found it brutal, I would have liked to follow some story much longer and see it more deeply.
A lot of point of view was missing according to me; why not introducing Marcus, Keris or even the night sower opinions - it would have given a little more depth to the actions and would have allowed us to get closer to characters a little darker and try to understand what motivates them.

Then, at a certain moment, Leila made me very upset! I understand how hard it must have been for her to take on this new role and make decisions that will cost the lives of certain characters. In spite of everything I found it in some moments far too indecisive and some of her choices have irritated me ...

Finally, I will finish by saying that it was interesting to have the opinion of Helene, her perceptions and following her in through her journey - It gave this little fresh wind that was missing.

I will read for sure the third volume, hoping to see more rebound at the level of the story, because for now, I confess staying on my end.

I was slowly falling into a reading slump but was quickly pulled out by this book!! I love it as much as the first book!

Adrenaline was pumping from the first page to the last. There was never a dull moment in this book and the plot twist was amazing!

This is one of my favorite series. I should warn you if your looking for a series packed with romance this isn’t the one, yes there is romance but it’s gotta be the most slowest burning romance I have ever seen, there is more action and thrill than romance, but it is still such a good read and I highly recommend.
