I’m really enjoying this series, which is surprising because I didn’t think I would after reading the first book. I really like seeing how the retellings fit into this futuristic setting and I really adore pretty much every protagonist in the book.

Re-read reviews are always really hard for me because I don’t know what to say. So, I’m just going to list the three main reasons why I love Cress so much and why it was my favorite Lunar Chronicles book (before I read Winter):

1. The addition of the Rapunzel story.
Rapunzel has always been a favorite of mine. Tangled will forever be one of my favorite movies because she’s just wonderful. Literally, in my sophomore Speech Class in high school, we had to do a “campaign” speech, and I ran to be the next Rapunzel. No joke.
So I love that Meyer added Rapunzel into it. But with that awesome sci-fi/fantasy twist. Cress (aka Rapunzel) isn’t in a tower. She’s in a freaking satellite, working as the Queen’s cyber-expert. It’s totally awesome.

2. I LOVE CRESS.
Besides the fact that she’s the Rapunzel character…I just love her. She’s really shy, but once she’s comfortable, she can definitely be spunky. Erm, so basically me. Just kidding. She and I are very different in certain ways. Like the fact that I know nothing about computer hacking and coding.
But she does romanticize everything, which sometimes I do, too. Romantic comedies can do that to a girl, okay?

3. The quotes.
I love quotes, and Marissa Meyer never fails. Here are some of my favorites:

“‘Captain?’
‘Yeah?’
‘Do you think it was destiny that brought us together?
He squinted and, after a thoughtful moment, shook his head. ‘No. I’m pretty sure it was Cinder.'”

“‘You said yourself that the people of Luna need a revolutionary.’ She lifted her chin, holding his gaze. ‘So I’m going to Luna, and I’m going to start a revolution.'”

“‘You can help me pick out a tiara when we’re done saving the world.’

“‘Maybe great, epic romances don’t just happen. We have to make them ourselves.'”

“‘I am an explorer,’ she whispered, ‘setting courageously off into the wild unknown.’ It was not a daydream she’d ever had before, but she felt the familiar comfort of her imagination wrapping around her. She was an archeologist, a scientist, a treasure hunter. She was a master of land and sea. ‘My life is an adventure.’ she said, growing confident as she opened her eyes again. ‘I will not be shackled to this satellite anymore.’
Thorne tilted his head to one side. He waited for three heartbeats before sliding one hand down into hers. ‘I have no idea what you’re talking about,’ he said. ‘But we’ll go with it.'”

4. The building tension.
Each each Lunar Chronicles book, another fairy tale is added into the mix. With this book, we have Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, and Rapunzel. So the plot is thickening, intensifying—all this wonderful good stuff that makes me want to forever keep reading. I love the intertwining of stories like this. It’s just so creative and unique and wonderful, wonderful, wonderful.

5. Of course, THE SHIP.
Cress + Thorne = Warm, fuzzy feelings.
Thorne’s overt flirtiness and Cress’s overt shyness (but also overt love for the romanticized version of him) is a lovely combination that will be sure to make you smile. Seriously.

I love Cress lots and lots. Finally, we start to see the story build up and up and up to what is surely the grand and epic conclusion of the 800+ page Winter. Seriously, I love it. Go read this series if you haven’t already. They’re so fun.

all the men in this book exist solely to pine after their love interests and that is how the world should be.

We have made it to Cress or Rapunzel . I’m always amazed when reading this series how well everything comes together, we have all the different story lines and fairy tales and yet it all comes together as one awesome story.

I rather enjoyed Cress in all her awkward and dreamy(ness) . She was fun to read and to see and follow her growth throughout the book. From the shy girl we first meet to the warrior she becomes in her own way.
I’m not really sure what to think of the shocking family reunion. I didn’t see it coming at all and it was really a surprise to me but also I’m not sure if it was a bit too convenient for the overall story line and everything connecting.

Thorne, I still enjoyed him a lot if not even more than last book. He puts out a tough shell for show but I think there is something nice and soft under that hard shell. I liked he handled his rather unexpected circumstance and he never lost hope or his humor. Be interesting to see how this will work out for him.

Of course we meet Scarlet and Wolf again, it was great to see how they are together. Something happens to Scarlet that throws them and everyone for a loop and is not solved by the end of the book. I can’t wait to see how that turns out. We also get a glimpse of how dangerous Wolf can still be.

Then we have Cinder and Kai…… I really like Cinder and I love how she becomes so much more confident with each book, she also becoming funnier, I think or at least she loosens up a bit and it comes over that way. But she also becomes stronger and started to lead more.

Kai, I still really enjoy Kai but man oh man was he dense in this book …. So many glues and he never got it until it got spelled out for him.

Iko, still my favorite and I like to see her transformations, I just can’t get enough of her….. We also meet some new faces that I enjoyed but to be honest also was a bit confused by. I’m still not sure which site Jacin really is after that ending. Time will tell I guess.

A lot of stuff is going and things are moving fast in a war to stop Leveana . We also get a sneak peak and idea of Winter.

The ending was scream worthy and I can’t believe it ended there and I can’t wait to get to the next book, which is a huge book I see.

Overall I really enjoyed it some parts were off or I wasn’t sure but for the most part I really liked it…

I rate it 4 ★

Loved the Rapunzel story + it was fun to read about how much she idolized Thorne and then had to come to terms with the real Thorne

Cress is a good return to form after Scarlet kind of derailed things for me.

This is my favorite from this series so far. I genuinely loved this book so much. I had a feeling I would because of it being a Rapunzel retelling type of book, but I underestimated how much I’d enjoy it. I love Cress and Thorne. I love Cinder and Kai again. I miss Scarlet and Wolf. I JUST LOVED THIS BOOK 🤭🤭. I’m struggling to decide if it gets a Hall of Fame shelf spot, so I think I’ll give it a temporary one. So, I give this book 5/5 stars and a spot on the Hall of Fame shelf.
