An amazing book, made even better by the narration of Andy Serkis. Such a grand, epic world with fun characters and a challenging quest.

It has a very unique feel that I don't think I've quite experienced in other stories I've read, though maybe I just haven't read enough fantasy. I'm amazed Tolkien managed to write it and I'm looking forward to the other two.

The first time I picked up this book was in 2010 and then again in 2015. This is my third reread. I'm an emotional mess when it comes to these books.
I watched The Lord of the rings movies in June of 2006 with my father. They played all three movies every thursday for three weeks straight. As a child I was fascinated with the characters and the world and all I wanted was to be as brave and adventurous as the hobbits and as wise and powerful as Gandalf. The month following that my country went into war that lasted the whole month of July. As you can imagine a 7 year old to be I was afraid, the sounds of bombs frightened me and till this day the sound of fireworks affect me the same way the sound of bombs did. In mid-July my dad bought me a toy that resembled one of the hobbits in the movies and I named him hobbit. Me and hobbit spent the rest of July being brave and finding courage in the simplest things around us and the days when I was afraid the most I used to reassure hobbit that I will protect him, that he doesn't have to be afraid. Yesterday I found hobbit in one of the boxes in our storage and boy the emotions and feeeeels hit me hard. I picked up the fellowship of the ring after that and stayed up all might reading the entire book.
This is not your typical review. It's a simple thank you to J.R.R Tolkien. I am so very grateful mister. Thank you!

Some things (of many many) the characters of these books taught me:

- Frodo taught me courage. To be brave and to stay strong when everything around me feels wrong. And that no matter how small you are or may feel you can still achieve whatever you set your mind too.
- It's okay to ask for help. Help isn't a bad thing. No matter how strong we are, sometimes we need someone to pick us up and carry us through Mordor.
- Samwise taught me that even darkness must pass:

"It's like in the great stories, Mr. Frodo. The ones that really mattered. Full of darkness and danger, they were. And sometimes you didn't want to know the end. Because how could the end be happy? How could the world go back to the way it was when so much bad had happened? But in the end, it's only a passing thing, this shadow. Even darkness must pass."

and "That there's some good in this world, and it is worth fighting for".

- The true meaning of friendship and how to be a loyal friend. That friendship and love are the most important things a person can have. And that friendship has no boundaries.

Not enough stars!

I know, the Audiobook is cheating, but I finally got 'round to it, and liked a lot.
