With Victor as an antihero for the majority of the book you really get the sense of the true Dr. Frankenstein from within the pages. I absolutely loved the way that Kenneth Oppel was able to twist this beloved story into a novel in which you feel for each character (although I did want to slap Victor a few times).

Loved this book when I read it as a kid but it doesn’t hold up quite as well in adulthood
Victor Frankenstein takes us on an adventure against mythical beasts and to dark libraries and creepy cemeteries. Motivated originally to save his twin brother, Konrad, he seeks answers in the forbidden alchemy. Young Victor struggles with his pride, curiosity, darkness, love and jealousy.
I’d hoped for more of the makings of Frankenstein, but I can see the groundwork being laid for darker things in the future.
I can’t believe this was my first LUKE DANIELS experience. I believe he captured the young Frankenstein’s strength and touch of wonder as he undertakes the impossible. You can feel his passion for Elizabeth and the danger that lurks beneath the surface when things don’t go his way. He also does Elizabeth justice. She balances boldness and the softness you expect from the time.

Kenneth Oppel has been a staple in young adult fiction since I was in elementary school. I have been reading his novels ever since I discovered Firewing, and I have to say his newest novel This Dark Endeavour is one of his best.
This novel follows Victor Frankentein as he struggles to find a cure for his ill twin brother. On his quest he discovers alchemy and decides that the Elixer of Life is the only way to save him.
I was engrossed from the very beginning, the diction was beautiful, making me feel like I was there in that time period, and his character were so vivid and strong. Victor is a character with a lot of strong qualities that make us want him to succeed, but what I loved about that character is that he is flawed. He is self centered, pig-headed and deceptive. He is real, and believable and that is why this book reads so strong for me.
The ending, for those of you that need a believable one, is fantastic. It is real, and believable, and Kenneth Oppel at his best. This is a fantastic for those lovers of Frankenstein and for boys as well as girls that have an advanced reading level. I say this because the diction in this novel is in the form of the time period, and might be harder for some to get through (but I LOVED it).
Please read this book, it was a fantastic read, and a pleasure to submerse myself in.

Wow, umm, hard to know what to say about this one. Horror is not a favorite genre of mine, and this does definitely crossover, but it's still a dark and fascinating story of brotherly love... and jealousy. Victor is a very dark soul. He has a wild temper, and a bitter sense of being eclipsed by his "perfect" brother, Konrad. But at the same time, loves him fiercely and would do anything for him, as he proves in his quest for the Elixer of Life, an alchemical mixture to save his brother's life. This Dark Endeavor is not a happy book, but I still plan on reading the next in the series, and not just because I have a review copy... A hard, but worthwhile read.
Yay for talented Canadian authors.
I will certainly be watching this film.
I have an intense fear of giant birds, water and fish of any size, specifically sharks and prehistoric looking things like this one, and loss of limbs or permanent body mutilation. Thank you Kenneth, for bringing all of my fears together in one place that was so fascinating I will never be able to forget them, unfortunately.
I have read the Airborn series and Darkwing, and Oppel never lets his readers down. All of his adventures are unique and dark. This is probably one of the best stories I’ve ever had the pleasure of reading.
I was thoroughly disturbed and involved in all three of the ventures made by the children.
Why?????????????????????
Thinking of rereading this one soon.

Spoiler
The giant birds in the tree scared the crap out of me. When Victor fell in the pool I almost stopped reading there, I was terrified. Kenneth Oppel really works with my imagination, sometimes when I read his work I take it much too far. I was certain the last trial would make me wish I had never read this. Why could he not lose his toes instead? Perhaps he would need three or four, but at least it would not be his fingers! And all for nothing, too. That’s always what gets me. Sacrifice to no avail. Why?????????????????????

3.5/5
Very interesting read, I must admit.
I have to say I haven't read Mary Shelley's Frankenstein yet. I know, I know, I've been meaning to do so, but how many books are there on my TBR so far? A lot, and it's constantly growing, so who knows when I'll be able to read it. However, this book made me even more excited for the novel which inspired it, because from what I know of the original story and what I've read, This Dark Endeavour gives a lot of explanations that are simply not there in Frankenstein, although I'm sure it's still an amazing story.
I was drawn to This Dark Endeavour for an unknown reason. It's not my favourite genre, and if someone had been looking for a book to recommend to me, this one would probably never have made it. However, I'm glad I picked it up, because it was definitely a short and fun read.
I found Victor's character how to get, because I never knew whether he was doing something for himself or out of kindness, which was very unsettling. I would've liked to be able to seize him a bit more, because I still feel like I don't know him well, but there's always the original novel to give me answers. I did understand how inferior he felt, because it must be awful to live in your twin's shadow, always being less successful in everything. Because of this fact, I found Konrad to be quite boring, always so selfless, nice and talented. I thought he lacked personality, but the contrasts between the twins were even more evident. I really liked the side characters, such as Henry and Elizabeth. I thought they were both realistic, because they have faults as well as qualities. I loved how Henry evolved throughout the story, because he was quite the coward at the beginning. Elizabeth's character seemed very interesting to me and I loved how feminist she is, without even knowing what it is. She stood up for herself more than once and it made me proud to see her defend women in this era where women were treated much worse than they are today.
As for the plot, although it interested me a lot, it didn't really have much to it. I understand how the book can be so short, because there isn't really any big event, just a series of small ones. I enjoyed my time reading, but I wasn't really invested in the story and I felt like it was just told in surface, not enough to make me feel anything. The ideas of it are great though, and they made up for the lack of events.
Overall, the best word to describe this novel is "interesting". It has a lot of potential, but it unfortunately didn't do it that much for me. It made me want to read Frankenstein, so I guess I would recommend it to its fans, because I think it's a nice addition to the original story and it's well done and well written.

Overall, this book was good but it was definitely meant for younger readers. The characters seemed very two-dimensional with the exception of the cousin, Elizabeth. She seemed to have the most personality and was the most believable to me. The plot was very predictable and I was able to predict the ending within the first 100 pages, which was the main reason for the two star rating. I feel, however, that I may just be too much older than the target audience to really appreciate this book. I would probably recommend it for younger teens, especially boys, as it seemed slightly more geared toward them.
