Look, all of these books are meandering messes with barely a plot thread and TONS of forgettable and sometimes abandoned characters and rabbit holes. But this is the first one that I felt really stuck the right balance between action and life-on-the-ridge and the first time I’ve been sad to leave them after 900+ pages!

I hate that I'm giving this a three. I love Outlander, and I enjoyed this latest installment of Claire and Jamie's story. However, I felt like a lot of foreshadowing gave away some of the significant events in the last part of the book, which is where all the action was. It felt like a lot of hype, and I didn't feel like the ending lived up to it because of how predictable some aspects were. There were so many different perspectives being told, which felt rushed. The best way I can explain it is the book felt very transitional. We had to get through this part of the story to get through the rest, and it lacked some of the heart that was in the other books.

When I first started reading this book, it felt a bit like rediscovering your favourite cozy sweater in the fall. I fell right back into life on Fraser’s Ridge. The book went a little off the rails, though. There were way too many people brought in as main and secondary characters. A few were quite far-fetched, like Sylvia Hardman. What reason to bring her back into the narrative? It was messy and got boring in parts when all these new people were given their own chapters. This was such a long book, too. I don’t mind that, but it really could have been pared down a bit.

I might have liked this book more if Diana Gabaldon hadn’t spent a significant amount of the first portion of the book recapping and retconning previous books. It took so long for something new to happen that this book could have been half as long as it was. Also, do the Frasers have to go about collecting all the sad souls in the colonies and bringing them home? And do we have to always conveniently run into characters just when we need them in towns and cities literally up and down the entirety of these colonies? I was really only interested in the bits with Hal and John, as well as Brianna and William. The sibling relationships are what’s keeping me going with these books, I guess.
