Where to even begin..?? I made several notes throughout reading and got salty reflecting on them all over again. First, didn’t realize the fourth book isn’t out yet and I’m dying? Unwell. Ends on a crazy cliffhanger and I need MORE. That being said there’s so much wrong with this book too but I still want book 4. So am I dumb? Idk man. Spoilers below
1. How is it possible that we see her get forgiveness for the fire situation but there are multiple times where she fails to disclose the full truth????
2. The device of “oh we’re about to f*ck but we get cut off” or the “about to get key info but gets cut off” got utilized WAY TO FUCKING MUCH. like made me super pissed off used too much.
3. Case in point, both Luther and FMC about to nut in the woods and her mom literally interrupts. This is not sexy, I would rather burn my eyes out than read a scene like this in a book ever again. Ick on max volume.
4. Vance is somehow still alive? Like plz just kill this mfer already. Someone willing to kill children to prove a point should prob just die and I feel like that’s not a hot take idk.
5. Ppl that can read your mind would know you’re ick’d out by them? Like you suddenly flirting with them after being revolted before you protected your mind against them…?
All that to say certain things just failed to add up. And there were lines that took me directly out of the story, including a time when FMC addresses the reader directly, literally stating “you get the point”. Like girl. This is not a tell and tell to the reader.
AND yet. I’ll still read the 4th book whenever the f it comes out I guess.

Heat of the Everflame completely swept me away. It takes the foundation built in Spark and Glow and expands it into something even more intense. The realms feel vast and alive, the magic is clever and surprising, and the political threads kept me glued to the page. From the first chapter, the pace is unrelenting. Every time I thought I could catch my breath, another twist landed and pulled me right back under. The scale of the story feels so much bigger now, and by the time I hit that ending, I just sat there in shock.
Diem continues to be one of my favourite heroines. She is bold and determined, but what moves me most is her compassion and hope for others even when she has every reason to give up on them. In this book, she feels more grounded in herself, more sure of her choices, and ready to claim her place in this dangerous world. Watching her step into that power was such a highlight for me.
And Luther… where do I even start? He has that brooding intensity, but also a depth of loyalty that makes my heart ache. His quiet acts of protection and his willingness to let Diem take care of him in return made their bond feel even more real. There is a gentleness beneath his armour that we get to glimpse, and it only made me love him more.
Thank you to Penn Cole for creating such an unforgettable story. Waiting for Burn is going to be agony but I'm ready for it!!!
