This a a great recommendation for teens who can't get enough of TFIOS. Mia and Zac are teen cancer patients in an adult cancer ward. Zach is patient with Mia's bitchiness and unwillingness to adjust to her new lifestyle as a cancer patient. I appreciate that Mia was so incredibly selfish and unlikeable. That will hopefully stand out to teen readers.

Likable characters. Family is very important in this book. But I think it should have been longer. I didn't really feel Zac & Mia's relationship until the end of the book. But it's worth a read! :)

Gah. I loooooved this book. I loved the narrative structure; it helped me to know the characters in such a good way.
I thought that Mia was such a realistic character: angry, in denial, frustrated at everything and everybody. I liked that this was more of a friendship rather than a relationship. It just felt more natural that way.
Plus they were from Australia, so the whole time I was reading with an Australian accent in my head.

Wie The Fault in Our Stars heeft gelezen, zal de gelijkenissen meteen herkennen.
Multiple points of view are difficult to justify and even more difficult to pull off. However, A.J. Betts does it beautifully. Zac and Mia have completely different emotional reactions to their cancers that make the POV character switching worth while and illuminating. Zac's hopeful, statistical approach against and in concert with Mia's more fierce and emotional approach let the reader know that everyone is going to deal with the tragedy of a fatal illness differently. Still we are left with hope. I was not a fan of TFIOS. I felt emotionally manipulated. Here, I just felt that I was in a really good story with flesh and illness characters who change significantly as a result of their experiences. I should mention that I was listening to the audiobook which amplified the two points of view.

Iām crying! This book is so sad and sweet. At first I liked Mia but then I hated her and how she hated everything and wouldnāt let anyone help her and zac he did everything to make her feel better. Then the roles were reversed and it was heartbreaking. I really liked this book.
3.5 STARS
This was so good! I was afraid it was going to be another version of The Fault in Our Stars (don't get me wrong - it's one of my favorite books, but there have been too many copycat versions over the years), but was sooo surprised by how beautifully original this story was. Were there similarities? Yes, of course - it't two kids with cancer. But I feel like that's where the similarity ends.
I wasn't a fan of Mia 99% of the book. Yes, losing a foot is traumatizing but she was unnecessarily mean and bitchy, I would have lost my temper with her 50 pages in. That being said, character growth was impressive!
I've had this book sitting on my shelf for about a year and am glad I finally picked it up. The author is a beautiful writer, certain lines felt like poetry.

Ancient Runes: Heart on the cover
Honestly, this book was neither bad nor good. Both Zac and Mia are complex in their ways. I despise Mia at first because she was always lying, stealing, and attack someone verbally but up until half of the book, she grows on me. The book didn't fail to show how vulnerable being sick is, which is a plus point. I was also surprised at first to know that this book takes place in Australia and was glad that romances were not heavily advertised here.
If you like The Fault In Our Stars, you might like this too. However, the beginning can be a little slow-pacing, but once you're halfway through it gets better.
QUOTE THAT I LIKE:

You can't help rooting for them both . Though Mia comes into the story as bratty as can be, you grow fond of Zac, and because he wants her to succeed, you want her to get past herself and succeed as well.
