Very sweet stories, i loved getting them read aloud in the audiobook by Derek Jacobi. I liked some stories more than others, but overall some very sweet stories.

Масивен Толкин-фен съм, но тези приказки не успяха да задържат интереса ми.
Most of the stories and poems are fantastic, but the essay on fairy-tales is too long and can be very hard to get through.
Cute stories but I had a hard time picking it up again each time I put it down.
Just when I'm afraid that I can't get into fantasy anymore - I read Mr. Tolkien and get my hope back.
Now 3 stars may seem like a bad rating, but let me say, all stories included excepting the "Tom Bombadil" poems were a delight - minimum 4 stars. The author's ingenuity is amazing, he can tell such fascinating stories in such a simple yet engaging way. I have never been a fan of poetry, so the Tom Bombadil poems didn't touch me much (Excepting "The Hoard", which was brilliant). The reason why I took the rating down a bit was that Tolkien's essay at the end was too long and not very interesting in my opinion. Still, the master had some wise words to say about what makes a good fairy-story, and I dare say a good story in general: "What really happens is that the story-maker proves a successful sub-creator. He makes a secondary world which your mind can enter. Inside it, what he relates is "true", it accords with the laws of the world (...)The moment disbelief arises, the spell is broken; the magic, or rather art, has failed. You are then out in the Primary World again, looking at the little abortive Secondary World from outside." With great humor, he concludes: when children ask if a story is 'true' "They mean: 'I like this, but is it contemporary? Am I safe in my bed? The answer: 'There is certainly no dragon in England today', is all they want to hear."

No sé porqué he tardado tanto en leer estos relatos, quizás porque no esperaba gran cosa de ellos pero me he llevado una buena sorpresa. Me ha gustado MUCHÍSIMO 'El Herrero de Wootton Mayor', 'Hoja de Niggle' también es una preciosidad, y 'Las aventuras de Tom Bombadil' (aunque en verso) son un complemento perfecto para leer tras 'El señor de los anillos'.
Los otros dos relatos me parecieron simplemente entretenidos pero todos tienen algo de original y único que solo Tolkien podía crear
